Dogs riding in the bed?
I wanted to get some opinions on letting my Aussie pup ride in the bed. He seems to love it, but I use to see guys with their dogs in the back, and worried about them getting into an accident. My sister even let her Aussie ride on her toolbox in her Ranger.
Anyway, yesterday was his 1 yr. B-Day so I blew $150 on him at Petco, including a "Truck Tie-Down." It is a cable that attaches to an eyelet on each side of the bed near the cab, with a ring in the middle that you attatch another cable to the dog's collar. Since I have the FlareSide, I adjusted it so it would clip to the brackets near the bottom corners of the bed, near the cab, and it worked great, but I was afraid of hurting his neck, so I got him a full on harness. (The type you walk them with.) Since the cable is at the bottom of the bed, rather than the top, I had to "extend" the "leash" with an 18" chain. Anyway, it seems to work fine, but I'm afraid of hurting him since I have the cheapo plastic bedliner, and keep his nails trimmed. Also, wouldn't the liner get hot? I dunno...just wanted some advice, as I have no room inside, he likes to be outside, and we're goin' to St. Louis this Fri. Thanks!!!

I can just post my personal experience statistics for the last 19yrs of LE:
* seen about 10 fatal accidents with pets in the bed. All pets died. Never have seen a "survivor pet" that was riding in the bed.
* seen 2 pets strangled off the side of the truck while cabled (owner had no idea until pulled over)
* seen 1 fatal accident where the pet in the bed caused the death of the occupant in the cab. both died.
* all "survivor pets" I have seen were actually in the occupant area.
I dunno, I can see it in the country on a short trip with no traffic. I just can't see it on a long ride from kcmo to stl.

I saw a dog sitting in the passenger seat of a ranger parked at a convenience store. I mean sitting up like a person leaning back against the seat back.
He had the seat belt with shoulder harness on. It was LOL funny.
Just a thought.

My dog is in the cab. I take him with me when I go out bar hopping. He gets the keys when I've had too many. I have to put it in gear for him because he doesn't have an opposable thumb. Then I set the cruise(it's about all I'm capable of). He drives over the double yellow, never signals and I think he races Chevys after I pass out but, he's getting better, I think.
The first time we tried it, I should have taken a cab. By the time we got home, we were arguing, me yellin, him growlin. I asked him flat out, who in their right mind ever gave him a license?
But, he didn't say nothin cause he can't talk. Dumb dog.

Raoul,
If your dog is half as funny as you, he can't be dumb.
Don't think I'd ever let my dogs ride in the bed. There are WAY TOO MANY idiots on the road these days. I'm sure you could get a good, safe setup for the dog, but after you take into account the morons on today's freeways, I don't think the bed would be a safe place for the dog. Hey Jackal,
I let my lab ride in the back with the rubber mat down. That plastic liner- He just slides everywhere-Danger! On long trips I have a "carry kennel" Kind you use on airlines. At first he didnt like it much, but became use to it, its much safer feelin knowing he's in there. I cant say the word "duck pond", "swimming",or "ride" without him getting excited. He's in the truck when the shotgun break out of the gunsafe too!!!
I'd personally pass on the cable deal. And if he ever jumped out - he only do it once!! Magnum, my lab did jump or slide out the side on time on a dirt trail when we passed some horses. He went to jump on the wheel hump and slid (plastic liner) out! He was shook up , bit his tongue but shook it off and went to see the horses. When I found ou he was ok , I took him back to the truck and scold him, he aint never done it again. I have put the mat in also. I was lucky and hope to never feel that again.
Good luck with your choice. >>>-ONE->
Sorry so long, Magnum is my buddy.

Hi Jackal,
You didn't say why you don't have enough room in the cab, but if it's because you have a 'significant other' riding with you, I have a suggestion. Let the dog ride up front, turn the driving over to your partner and invest in a good body harness for yourself. I can tell you for a fact that you've never had serious fun until you've stood in the bed all the way to KC. Might want a good pair of goggles, though.

My pet's vets (husband & wife team) won't let their dog ride in the bed of their truck. Says too many dogs come in for emergency treatment. They also won't let their dog stick her head out the window. Says dogs don't have the blink reflexes that we have and they see a lot of eye damage at their practice.
I was just going to mention Vet's too. My neighbor is a Vet (very convenient for us in emergencies!). When he saw my SCrew for the first time he asked what I thought about dogs riding in the bed (I have a Goldie). I told him, essentially, "maybe only to the store and back". He said, like above, that he sees far too many permanently maimed dogs in his emergency room from riding in the bed. Most of the other problems, he said, come from Heat Prostration. That bed is hot as hell in summer, even with the wind blowing, because the sun on their bodies is constant. If you're stop-and-go in town, the stress is worse. Couple that with todays plastic bedliners and he says you've got a death just waiting to happen because they dehydrate so fast, and often cannot rid their bodies of the heat fast enough by panting. I got a kennel for the long hauls, and rig a stout "tent fly" over that to keep the heat to a minimum. Other than those times....He's in the cab with us. And let me tell you, brothers and sisters, I feel MUCH BETTER for it. So does "Bart". (And we just don't take him anyplace where he'd be sitting in the cab any longer than 10 minutes. It just isn't worth the risk for us).

I was in Omaha NB a while back. While driving down the road this truck passed me,with a dog laying on the toolbox. He was a VERY large dog. Full size truck,,paws hanging over one end,and tail off the other.
I don't have dogs yet,but when I do,they will never ride in the bed, crated or not. Just my opinion

HAHAHA!!! The Nat. Motocross World finals man.
Every year. YOu're pup's 9 yrs. old now? That's great, I wondered how long they lived....I couldn't imagine losing my puppa-man.
I may get his full sister here in May...that's when she'll be born anyway. I can't believe how smart they are...my sis had two, and I had never seen them before then, and knew I had to have one. Love their personallity, the way they use their eyes, their overall appearence, etc...etc. Milenko has especially long "butt hair." LOL!!! Both his parents are active "show dogs" and weigh in at about 45 lbs...however, Milenko is a whopping 60 lbs!!! HUGE. He's had 1 cup of Max Nutrition, 3 times a day, since his eyes were open, so I know he doesn't eat too much.
