DeWalt hands down.
I have absolutely punished mine and it has never let me down. I have the 18v though, you may want to consider upgrading to that if you have more serious projects in the future.

I have 3 Porter-Cable drills of different voltages and one DeWalt...all about ten years old. They have all aged very well. The DeWalt is a good product, but I think the Porter-Cables are better. If you want to keep it for a long time, why take a chance with the 'store brand'?

Dewalt or Makita we use both at work, i learn for the makita more it fits better in my hand the dewalt is to up and down for me.
The Makita has built in LED's FYI
and dont settle for anything less then a 18v you will regret it

For what they cost, I use the el cheapo Harbor Freight 18 volt drills. They are okay for home use, they DO have more power than 12 volt name brand drills. I buy this kit when it goes on sale for 20 bucks:

So what if they might not last? $140 will buy a LOT of them and you will wind up with a lot of spare batteries. Try one and see how you like it - you don't have much to lose. 30 day money back and 90 day replacement warranty.
