If your unfortunate enough to have to visit Yankee Country - like Boston (pronounced BAH-stin), this guide may help you understand what they are sayin', (but I doubt it).
Pahty: A place to go to drink and socialize - nothing to do with Mother Nature.

ah: The letter between "q" & "s."

ahnt: Sistah of your fathah or muthah.

bah: Serves beah and hahd likkah: "The train to Noo Yok has a bah cah." bay

ah: Ferocious brown or black animal.

beah: Malt beverage.

bahn: As in: "What yeah were you bahn in?"

bzah: Strange, odd.

Chahlz: The rivah.

chowdah: Clams, milk, buttah.

cahn: Stahchy veggie that comes on a cob.

connah: Where streets intersect.

fah: Not neah heah

fahk: What you eat pahster with.

fiah: Blaze

Gahden: What they closed last yeah (also a place to plant flowahs.)

hahbah: What they dumped tea into in 1773.

Hahvid: Preppy college across the rivah.

hahf-ahst: Done without regahd to detail.

heah: Done with the eahs. "Listen my children, and you shall heah of the midnight ride of Paul Reveah."

khakis: What you staht the cah with and keep on yawh key chain.

nawtheastah: Stahm that blows in from the wottah.

As a Born and Raised New Yorker living in this BACKWARD STATE of North Carolina..let me set you straight 01s1, a very few people talk like you indicate on your post up North, it would only be some uneducated idiot!. I have to endure hearing here in the South made up words like Jew Lie instead of JULY, when I ask for a pen they give me a PINNNN..when I ask for a pen they want to know if I want an INK PINNNN..I thought all pens come with INK!. Instead of Money I hear MOO KNEEEEE!..PUMPKIN is PUMP KENNNN..I could go on, but, I think you get the point..All the TV stations down here, have people who talk NORMAL! NO ONE WHO SAYS

Glad to see another transplant from NY living so close by. I`m in agreement with you in all aspects. When I first came down here I was saying "What was that" all the time, bad thing is my son is growing up here talking the same way. I`ll take the upstate NY way of talk any day plus the lifestyle up there. People down here are so sloooow and backwards.
Of course in defense of all my F150 owning friends in NC, you are not included in this generalization. I`m just a Yankee at heart and 23 yrs worth is hard to let go of.
Boston and New Jersy accents always amused me living there but still understood every word.

What part of upstate were you from? I was born in the Bronx, lived in Queens and moved up to the Lower Hudson Valley..now Im here due to my job! Is it really worth it????? I made a MAJOR MISTAKE!!! They are still fighting the CIVIL WAR HERE!!! Its truly amazing in the YEAR 2001. Give me a break none of us, were not even born when this war took place..GIVE IT UP ALREADY!!!!

 

Wonder why so many Southerners are upset? Think it's because the media and others are always attacking their heritage. After a while you just get tired of the attacks and have to stand your ground. It's really a strange world that we live in.

 

In Georgia they are making the Southerns take off the Confederate Symbol from their State Flag..Heritage is one thing..carrying hate is another thing. That is what the Georgia Flag stood for. This is suppose to be the UNITED STATES, NOT NORTH AND SOUTH. Many countries have gone through Wars, only the South carries this North, South thing! Japan was bombed by the United States, yet they raised up from the ashes and have become one of the Worlds Leaders in Technology. Yet the South still has outhouses! Come on already!

Raised in Rochester(Fairport) from the age of 2. Brother moved to Durham also for 2 yrs for job then went back to Palmyra. Didn`t care for the life down here and moved back to Palmyra NY. Rest of family have also moved south and gone back except parents who retired to lake in VA. Been here 10 yrs(job also) and I`d go back in a heartbeat except kids are too involved with schools and etc down here to tear them away for my personal wants. Cost of living is cheaper here for the plus side

My wife was born near Rochester (Botavia, Chili, and some town/village starting w/ a "C" Clarendon? maybe), anyway, she'll never go back upstate. She likes the area, only to visit though. We went up for about a week just before we were married. I like it alright, too damn cold most of the year!!! Your name is appropriate. Hop on and head back to New York before making yourself sound more ignorant than you have already. The "real" (1956) GA State flag was adopted to honor our Southern heritage in a time when it was being desecrated by people like you, just as it is now. Anyone who tries to attach hatred to the flag needs a history lesson. It never represented slavery or any other racial issues because the Civil War wasn’t fought for those reasons. It never represented the KKK or Skinheads because those groups used it after it was created. Don’t slander my Southern heritage with your ignorant views obviously tainted by left wing media. I bet you believe it was used to protest integration too, huh? People like you are why the media has its way with the minds of Americans. What is the NAACP if not a modern day KKK for blacks? They don’t burn crosses though they’re smarter than that. No, they boycott mom and pop convenience stores for flying the state flag in an attempt to put them out of business. What if I founded a group called the “National Association for the Advancement of Whites” and started my own television station called “White Entertainment Television” that only hired white people? I’d be labeled a raciest and hate monger even though I wanted nothing but an equal playing field to celebrate MY color and MY history! Wake up to the reality of things. If MLK were alive today he’d be disgusted by what his legacy has become. Then again, if he were, we wouldn’t be posting messages like this on a truck board would we?

First of all let me give you a history lesson, the Conferdate Flag symbol was used as a Nautical Symbol on ships..it did not start off as a Hertiage thing..Than the KKK adopted it..that is why the Black People find it so offensive...and I do not blame each and every one of them. Because, the Southern Gentlemen down here fly that flag and write go home Yankees in the year 2001. I do not see the Northerns with license plates (or tags as you call them) with Lincoln symbols or the Blue Uniform of the Union Army.

And the Civil War in case you need to be refreshed was fought partly, because, you Southern Gentlemen decided to go to Africa and enslave innocent black people, because, you were to dam lazy to farm your own plantations. That is why Lincoln had to step in. Shame on You and your HERITAGE. I would not be proud of it!.Now you are importing MIGRANTS (the new slaves of the past) to take over all the dirty work and pick cotton and tobacco and paying them poor wages!.There are no RHETT BUTLERS DOWN HERE..only in Movies!!!

Our country has a very good and bad past history. I guess I just get tired of hearing how perfect others are compared to the south. NBC news identified that a large slave trading center that was located in New York at one time. This center was only second in size to Charleston SC. Funny that the history books never mention it. Anyway I believe the whole institution was wrong and would never want to go back to it. As one Black historian wrote "It was not just a Southern Institution but a American Institution." This country's laws protected this evil at one time. No one has clean hands regarding this matter. Even the tribal leaders sold their own people into bondage for money. How sad. God Bless America for the changes it has made.

 

Considering it was just a joke, there buddy. I think you are the only one throwing a fit over North and South. But, I'll tell you, it is much easier to understand a little Texas draw than a Yankee accent. What bothers me about the whole deal is all the Northerners critizing our accents and saying they don't have accents, and then saying the we are the ones carrying hate. By the way, I happen to look mostly caucasian, but in reality I have more American Indian than anything. And, I do not carry around a Conferedate flag or make racial comments.
I just got a little kick out of the fact that someone joked around about the way some Northerners talk.
Not too mention, that all the mediators do not have Northern accents, they don't have strong accents of any kind, be it Northern or Southern.
