The sad thing is that we are governed by the 'homeland security' and the USCG so much on these vessels that if we can't carry arms on them then who can? We have to jump through so many hoops just to get and keep our USCG Liscenses it is pathetic. Pirates are the reason that I stay on the Inland Waterways.(rivers, lakes, etc.)
I don't know the solution, maybe an armed escort or two, maybe an arscenal on each ship with trained security, hell I don't know. I can say this though, the U.S. needs to do something. We look soft to the other countries. And we need to quit rebuilding the countries that we blow up. WTF is that all about?

President Thomas Jefferson knew how to deal with Pirates. Obama needs to brush up on his presidential history.

We need to go old school on the douchebag pirates. Catch them, hang them, and destroy their bases. Simple as that. It worked back then, it'll work now.

Dirty bastards.
I dont understand why you would not want to let the pirates speak with Obama, he could change their lives after seeing the light, and become productive members of society. That and he could get their vote for the next election.

Looks like the Navy sniped a few of them bad boys and we got the Captain back. Go Navy! Three shot and killed and one turned himself in. Apparently the Captain offered himself as a hostage so his crew could escape.

Jamac Habeb, a 30-year-old self-proclaimed pirate, told The Associated Press from one of Somalia's piracy hubs, Eyl, that, "our friends should have done more to kill the captain before they were killed. This will be a good lesson for us."

"From now on, if we capture foreign ships and their respective countries try to attack us, we will kill them (the hostages)," he said.

I don't know. I know I'm no sniper but I know what it's like trying to shoot a deer at 200 yards in a swaying tree, and it ain't easy!
MOMBASA, Kenya - U.S. Navy snipers opened fire and killed three pirates holding an American captain at gunpoint, delivering the skipper unharmed and ending a five-day high-seas hostage drama on Easter Sunday.

The pirates were pointing AK-47s at Capt. Richard Phillips and he was in "imminent danger" of being killed when the commander of the nearby USS Bainbridge made the split-second decision to order his men to shoot, Vice Adm. Bill Gortney said.
WOW!

I guess those guy's are a LOT better than me and my 300 in a swaying tree!

Way to go NAVY! That's how it's done!

Thank your president, he gave the order that if the authoritys on the Bainbridge felt the captian was in imediate danger, to do what they had to do.

I love the liberal press making it look like the Muslim President gave the order. Deadly force is authorized without the President's order.

My mistake, it took 3 of them, not 1.

I'm not a fan, but he did authorize it. The standoff had a lot of political ramifications, so lethal force did come from the top on this one.

I would love to kill every pirate in the ocean on sight, but the reason why it took so long was because no hostages have been killed by pirates yet, and the risk of increasing violence instead of just hostage/money scenario will grow if they killed the pirates. Plus they are currently holding over 200+ sailors from many different nations.

Neither Russia nor Saudi Arabia has used military force against the pirates yet, ironically it's only the US and France that has so far used military force and actually killed some pirates.

I personally think it will escalate to the point the pirates will start killing civilians to get their points across, and that will finally open up "pirate season" and everyone will start killing them on sight along with using weapons aboard ship.
