Another Deer strike
The deer got the better of my buddies F150 last night. Hit a small buck around 7:30 and hardly any noise or jolt except for the airbags going off, and the windshield stress cracking. When we got out to look it was a different story!! Glad we were in a F150 and not in either of our other vehicles.
I guess in NC we use a weapon with a little more stopping power.Bad side is it gets costly!!! Offered to drive mine but he had his warmed up so I didn`t, guess it was a twist of fate I didn`t

At least neither of you were hurt. What's it like when the airbags go off?? Has your friend started looking at upgrading his grill, now that insurance will be paying for it??

I understand Tina's question about the airbags. Spartan bought her '97, hit a tree and the airbag messed him up pretty good.
That truck looks like a '99. Wondering if the bags are any 'softer' on deployment?

Yikes. I hit a big buck back in '88 with a Ranger pickup. I was going 60 at the time, didn't even have time to use my brakes.
Score..... Deer 0, Ranger 0. It was pretty much a tie. I sent it to deer heaven, but my truck had to be towed home and repaired to the tune of $2500. A fair sum of money back in '88. They're thick here in Nebraska, almost as bad as an infestation of rats.
I've heard horror stories of them coming through the windshield. You're lucky you weren't in a Honda Civic or some other small car. Glad no one got hurt. Your buddy can get his truck fixed, people take a lot longer.

Tina,
Guess we were lucky with the airbags all I heard was a bang then a cloud of white and dust. No injuries from them going off. I had seen pictures of someone who got hit by the bag also and it wasnt pretty.
Raoul it is a 99 XL model.Never been in a older truck that had the bags go off so I`m not sure if they are softer.
Jag, yeah we were glad to be in the 150. The other choices would have been our wives cars which are both `00 models being a Focus and Windstar. The Focus would have rolled it up over the hood for sure. We hit it doing 55 with no time to react.
Deer died moments after but was messed up pretty bad. Broke its antler off in bumper/grille assembly on impact as we found it afterwards jammed in there. Wasnt a really big deer compared to others I`ve seen around here so I guess we were lucky!!

I kidded him about not being a true southern boy and keeping his kill. The Deer wasn`t spread out over the road as you can see but he was more worried about his vehicle at the time.
Tina. The people who did the estimate for him yesterday are going to upgrade his grill to a color keyed surround with silver honeycomb insert as well as a color keyed bumper cover. They claimed in the repair book it was the same cost to replace these with new style as the XL line ones that were on it.
Total estimate for repairs was 5700.00 so far including the airbags. When they popped open the hood we found the spare tire rod had been pushed back far enough to penetrate the battery, both radiator and condensor were punctured and the evaporator was broken. These deer can do some damage.
Seacrow. Yeah I believe its much easier to shoot these things now, the ammunition is just too darn expensive this way

Boy I guess I am lucky, I hit a deer with my F-150 about 6 months ago. The deer I hit was a little bit bigger than the one in the picture. My truck survived with almost no damage at all. I was going 60 mph and I think I just clipped the rear of the deer with my driver side bumer corner. Before I got out of my truck I thought that it was going to be messed up. I got out and had a hard time finding anything. I eventually noticed that my airdam had been pushed into my frame rail and left a l shaped cut through the airdam it is about 2" high and 1.5" wide (not too noticable). Later when washing the truck I noticed that the head of the deer must have hit the rear of my fender, because it was slightly pushed in at the gap between the fender and the door. The small dent is only about the size of a quarter and you con only see it if you look for it and at the right angle. I will try to post a picture soon.

This deer thing is kind of pet peeve of mine. Every week around here (NW Iowa) the only police reports one reads about in the paper are car-deer accidents. There are 5 accidents a week in a very small town. What the heck is going on, letting so many deer run loose?
People are getting injured and there are millions of dollars of property damage, lost work time, and aggravation. All so we can have more deer running around? Guess I'm not Politically Correct, but I say let the hunters thin the population down so we humans don't get killed or hurt running into them.
I know of several motorcycle riders who are handicapped or dead because of deer-motorcycle accidents. There simply are just too many deer out there these days.
Rant mode off.
