RoadRunner, you reload an F-150 by putting it in reverse i guess.

Harley Guy where in NW Iowa are you from? I'm from Swea City in NC Iowa. As far as what you said about the deer I agree with you completely. That is why my friend and I have been trying to do our part to help. Between the 2 of use we have about 8 deer tags for muzzle loader and each of us had 1 for bow. Both of these got filled. Probably will have the muzzle loader filled pretty quick.

When I drove over to Biketoberfest in Oct. I took a backroad through Ocala National Forest. At about 2:30 a.m. I kept seeing dozens of these huge deer along the sides of the road. I slowed to about 35mph for about a 4-5mile stretch. They had no antlers so I guess they were huge does. they were the size of a small horse. I could only imagine what hitting one is like.

Why do they run out in front of cars?
Do they normally stand at the side of the road like this? I must of seen about 60 of them in that stretch of road. I live in the city and don't see deer that often.

seacrow, I got on my wife for chucking an apple core out the window. She said it's biodegradable and the deer will eat it. I told her she was causing accidents because the deer are hanging out beside the road where people chuck their garbage out the window.

I'm happy you were OK after the accident. I don't want to minimize the danger you went through but in northern Ontario we'll have over 100 moose/vehicle accidents a year. Now thats a smack! Is this becoming another contact sport for ESPN2?

Heck, deer is out of season there, so the only "legal" way to bag one is to use your truck, right??? ;-)

Out here, we have mule deer which are smaller than whitetails. Also have pronghorn antelope which are smaller yet. They dont cause too much damage--unless it goes through a windshield.

What scares me are elk--they can be well over 6' tall without antlers and easily weigh 1200 lbs (mature bulls). And during rutt they actually do charge cars and trucks and the antlers can puncture sheet metal!!!!

Then in wyo and montanna there are bison esp in yellowstone and tetons. nearly a ton of beef. and fast. and unpredictable. and dangerous. But tourists walk up to them with johnny sitting on their shoulder for pictures by mommy with a box camera just like the were in a petting zoo...and every year several tourists are gored by bison. Last summer an aussie was gored at old faithfull. Not pretty.

anyways, when they put the big grille guards on the trucks, they call them "elk guards" but I dont see how they would help much.

Hey, when the airbags blew, how was he able to maintain control and see where he was going? Just curious... Also, where was he holding his hands at the time of the impact, and what, if any, damage did it do to his hands, wrists, forearms? Obviously nothing severs, but did it even make contact? Just curious...

Here in Jersey because of the population density, cars and deer making aquaintance is a fairy common occurence. It's like in the early summer the new ones(or dumb ones) haven't figured out the game and they get hit. Then things mellow out and you can blow by em feeding on the side of the road and never worry about them doin somethin stupid. Then bow season starts in the fall (and ruttin')and you got people in the woods, the deer get jumpy and you really gotta be on your toes all the time..
We've been hunting for like 200 years AND encroaching on their habitat big time AND increasing the # you can take in a season and there's still more of em every year. The only soloution I see is a way to sterilize doe's. The bucks can impregnate 100's of females so culling them is obviously not the answer, plus you can't tell the 1st year bucks from the does till the following season anyway, and by then they're takin care of business.
I'd love to see how much these things are costing us each year- not to mention crops.....

I went to Ga. over the weekend, while driving with my father on a two lane rural highway, a deer ran out in front of a Toyota Celica two cars ahead of us. My father was just telling me about the two company cars he has totalled this year from deer alone, a 99 Taurus and a 99 Explorer. He hates deer. The Celica was destroyed. the whole front end was smashed, radiator busted, fender bent against the front wheel. Definitely not driveable. I was amazed by this, he was just telling about how bad the problem is in NW Ga. when we almost rear-ended the car in front of us trying to avoid the car in front of him that hit the deer. My father said he heard of some sterilization program that the State of Ga. is doing. They feed them some kind of "deer birth control" but I don't think that will prevent the "rutting". Did not know what "rutting" was either. My father says there are more deer in Ga. than there is ****roaches in Fl. That's pretty bad.

Do driving lights help a little or a lot in stopping the deer's eyes farther out? I might be able to justify getting a pair. Of course, I'd have to get them for my wife's Montero, too.

at Night out here in West Texas I turn my KC's on ( off when oncoming cars are present or COULD BE present) and I can spot them further away.

We have got the deer proble where I live also.Just the other day I saw a real nice (6 point) buck get drilled by a minivan in the middle of town.Damage to the minivan was extensive. The deer suffered two broken legs and a busted antler.Local police came and shot it,then hauled it off to feed the lions and cheetas at our local game park/zoo (wildlife Safari). The county actually hires out someone to drive around and pick up these road kills and drop them off for the kitty cats.

Well, airbags are no fun, at least mine wasn't. You literally don't know what hit you cause you can't even see the thing deploy. Before ya know it, yer face stings, the cab is filled with the smokey-powder & the smell that goes with it. Didn't even realize I was bleeding until someone pointed it out. Hurts much worse that night trying to sleep (ie you can't). Next four days in bed with some good healing cream and yer good to go.

Btw, I'm back to full health, my truck got fixed and has a billet grill and one of those cobra hoods

clancyb: no driving lights won't scare deer off if that's what you mean, it's the lights that make them freeze in their tracks, until it's too late, then they take off.
although they may make it easier for you to see the deer, although i doubt it. if a deer doesn't want you to see him you won't. usually the ones hit the most are during the rut. at this time you have no idea where they will go or come from. the big boys just follow dem does no matter where they go.
up here we get quite a few car deer wrecks every year. that's why the state gave out 2 bonus permits for every license purchased. yep the old truck finally got to haul some deer.
