A friend of mine who is into Cinematography recently got a Canon GL-1 it's probably the best consumer camera on the market it's about $2200 online (cameraworld.com). It's kinda big though, still easy to hand hold with one hand though.

If you want one of the cool little pocket sized DV cameras the Sony one with the Carl Zeiss lens is also very nice. But since it says "Sony" & "Carl Zeiss" on it you are paying mucho dinero for branding. Although it is a great camera.

If you have the cash (around $2000) just make sure you get one with 3ccd's (I Know the GL-1 does not sure about the sony) you will get much better picture quality especially when zoomed in.

Oh & the Sony one is the one they used for American Beauty. So if you wanna see how good it's pictures are just watch the movie.

Sony makes some excellent digital camcorders. I have the JVC DVM70U; it's nice and very compact and the video quality is excellent. Some important factors when shopping for a camcorder is the CCD, battery life (get a camcorder that takes lithium-ion batteries), firewire hookups for the computer, and the optical zoom. Forget about the digital zoom, it's kinda worthless.
