Obama Bans Mexican Trucks

I've never been in favor of Bush's "pilot program" that allows Mexican Trucks to drive anywhere they want in the US. Use AMERICAN Drivers!! How can you drive a truck across the US and not speak English!?

Well Obama just Banned it, and it appears the Mexican's are Mad:

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico said on Wednesday it was imposing tariffs on U.S. imports of fruits, vegetables and household products after Washington banned Mexican trucks from U.S. roads.

I thought this meant I wouldn't be seeing any more Ford LOBOS or '95 Chevy's with 14" wide tires on 13" wheels cruising around anymore...but this is a good thing too.

This would've been a good idea 20 years ago before Mexico produced half the stuff sold here. It's going to be too little too late I think.

I always wondered why Bush thought that allowing Mexican 18 wheelers to drive in the US was a good idea.

On another front, ACORN is getting approval to help hire the workers of the next census.

Not sure if I liked the idea, but it would reduce costs. Also the pilot program was basically for 100 trucking companies totaling about 540 trucks. As Canadian trucking companies have no restrictions, why should Mexican?

Maybe we should ask why nearly all of insurance companies tell you to have a nice day while driving in Canada but, insist on selling a seperate policy for Mexico.

Canada = covered
Mexico = not covered

Can't answer that, but I would suspect it would have more to do with theft, or Mexican laws.

Here's the issue as I see it. The Mexican trucks are carrying somewhere in the neighborhood of 100,000lbs. Max weight allowed in Texas is something like 60,000lbs. The hiways are not going to last long with the loads these Mexican trucks are carrying. All you have to do is drive on any Mexican hiway, if you can call it that, and you'll see why a lot of their hiways are gravel. I have a very close friend that runs trucks in Mexico and he has about 250 rigs. None would even get close to passing any inspection in the States. They basically run them until they break and that includes brakes, brake lines/hoses, steering gear, etc. It's the way business is done down there. The biggest issue I have with the Mexican trucks- no load inspections are allowed. That means any terrorist group could hire any trucker over there to bring a nuclear device to your neighborhood and deliver it. There would be no inspections of the truck at all. The Mexican trucks are also not subject to any state laws meaning your DPS can't pull one over for drunk driving, speeding, running red lights, nothing. Worst yet, the Texas Trans Corridor hiway which was to be funded with US tax dollars was a direct route from Laredo to Minneapolis. These trucks would have direct access to the heart of this nation with no one allowed to look at them. The TTC hiway was to be GIVEN to a Mexican company to run and use as a toll road that you, the taxpayer who paid for it, had to pay to use but the Mexican trucks didn't have to pay. So far, the project is on hold but it sure caused quite a rage in Texas while it was active. Considering the Mexican Gov't is about to lose a war with the drug lords, I don't see this as a bad thing. So far, it's the best thing Obama has done.

From what I have read, their safety record is on par with US trucks. The main reason for the ban is money, for the Teamsters. The safety issue was nothing but a smokescreen.
Also currently, and I don't expect it to last long, US trucks have always had full access to Mexican roads. Products going south did not have to be unloaded and reloaded to proceed.
I am not saying at this time that I am for or against allowing Mexican trucks on US roads, but the US signed an agreement (NAFTA) which specifically states that this type of things being reciprocal.
