Labnerd,
Everytime I read your coherent, logical posts I get blindsided by some off the wall line that floors me....

Also currently, and I don't expect it to last long, US trucks have always had full access to Mexican roads. Products going south did not have to be unloaded and reloaded to proceed.
I am not saying at this time that I am for or against allowing Mexican trucks on US roads, but the US signed an agreement (NAFTA) which specifically states that this type of things being reciprocal.
I have no idea about their safty numbers, but I can assure you that some of them do not look safe. Along those same lines, we have had several bus accidents involving Mexican bus companies. There is a crackdown going on now with those.

Maybe some good things will come out of it like more jobs here.

I glad you find humor in the posts. Unfortunately, this is exactly what DPS told us at a meeting about the Texas Trans Corridor hiway about the Mexican trucks. I have family with land that has been in the same family before Texas became a territory or a State. They were about to lose 200 acres to this joke. I went with them for back up and I wanted to know exactly what was going to be happening. But yep, the State of Texas could not stop these rigs for any reason nor could they be inspected for any reason. It was a hands off situation that DPS really stressed to the folks at the meeting.

Regardless if you think Mexico is a 3rd world country, you had better show some respect. If it survives the drug lords, it will be a major industrial power in the next 30 years. They've gotten the message about education and they are now producing some of the sharpest folks in several industries. While you may think of the Asians as the super smart, the Mexicans will be there soon.....if the Gov't survives.

NAFTA has been a major change for Mexico already. There are tons of businesses that are profiting from the NAFTA deal on the Mexican side. The truckers are just a drop in the bucket. But if the Mexican truckers wanted to play on the same grounds, they have the ability now to come across and run down our roads. All they have to do is submit for license, get the required insurance, get the trucks inspected and haul loads that do not exceed our laws. In basics, all they have to do is honor our laws and they can run up and down our hiway all they want. But that's not what the Mexican truckers wanted. They want to haul the extra heavy loads. They do not want inspections on the crappy trucks, they do not want to pay road taxes for the damages their rigs will surely do. They're looking for a free ride. Kinda like the morons in Washington, at AIG, Fanny Mae, Freddie Mac,.........

If the trucking laws were structured after the EU's laws I don't see this as being an issue. There every truck must follow the laws of the country they are in. For example France does not allow trucks to operate on Sunday. So if a truck with German tags is in France they must stop until Monday morning. While they are there the local law enforcement has full authority.

What I do not like is the thought of unregulated, unstoppable, unsafe trucks doing as they please.
