Angry This is a Crock of SH*@

I went to the dealership yesterday to try and get myself back into a Mustang. I looked at a GT for 21K. Now get this. My 2000 F-150 Sport XL, was about 18K with tax and license. Well It is garage kept, and in beautiful condition, the engine bay is cleaner than a brand new car, and only driven 3 days a week. I have had it 5 1/2 months and have 4000 miles on it. (most of the miles came from road trips)
Well They would only give me 11K for trade in value.. I was pissed. I told them that my truck has lost 7K in value in less than 6 months???? I told them I had a 97 mustang with 17K miles on it and was 2 1/2 years old and got 12K for trade in. I'm so ticked right now. So basicaly with 320.00 a month payments for 4 1/2 more years @ 5.1 financing, I will never be on top for a decent trade in. Ugh I want a GT sooooo bad..... But it doesn't look like I will for a while. Guess I should be happy I have a new truck, and go with it. I could have a 62 pinto with failing health, huh?

The dealer wants to make a lot of profit on the resale of your truck. The only time they will give you a good trade in value is if you are massively overpaying for the new car!

My wife bought a new car this year - two dealers offered us $2500 for her high mileage '93 TBird; we sold it private party for $4400.

I would try to sell it privately for about $16.5k. If someone asks for financing, tell them to go to a bank and get a loan and bring youa cahiers check. Good Luck, better mod that mustang right after you get it!

Cool

Go to the Kelly Blue book and NADA websites ( www.kbb.com and www.nada.com ) and see what they list as trade-in, market, and retail values are. You can use those number to deal with another dealer, or to get a fair amount to sell for privately.

Unfortunately any new vehicle depreciates several thousand dollars the second you drive it off the lot.

Actually, if you had that '62 Pinto you'd have quite a collector's item.

It can't hurt trying to sell it yourself.

The big disadvantage to selling it yourself is you may have to make 2 payments for a while and you can't use any equity in the old vehicle for the downpayment. Also, selling is a hassle.

IMO its worth it to dip into your savings or use credit cards to avoid getting ripped off on your trade in. The hassle is worth saving the extra $2,000 or so (maybe more in your case)

BTW, my experience is that Kelly Blue Book is usually very optimistic. If you price at retail blue book you might not even get any calls.

You will get screwed when you go to trade in your vehicle. Happens everytime. I always get the retail price + trade in price and then divide by 2. That will give you the half way mark. Round up. Then compare that to other priced vehicles.

It's not fair to say the truck lost that much value in 6 months. It is fair to say, however, that that dealer wants to screw you. I'd RUN out the door. Are they the only game in town? If not, visit 'em all and play one against the other. There's a pretty good market for used F-150s and somebody out there probably will give you a fair price for it. You'll always come out better selling it to a private party. In your case, it sounds like an nice truck and an easy sell. But sometimes you gotta' work for it!
And BTW, what does a '62 Pinto look like?

Story of my life too --

Buy High

Sell Low

Perhaps there's someone out there who'd like to trade his new Muskratt for an F-150.

If that's the same dealer you bought your truck from tell them to FO and never go back again. Then give them bad marks when you get the Ford survey for your truck. My brother in law works at a Ford dealership and said those surveys are taken very seriously.
