Hi Silver Bullet,

We live out in the sticks, so all we have available is 56K dialup access. No cable modem, no DSL, nothing.

So I finally made the plunge, and got the DirecPC setup. It's nowhere near as fast as your numbers (WOW!!), but it sure blows away bonding 3 modems like I was under Windows 98.

I visited a buddy in the city who has cable access, and that was what convinced me I couldn't live with dial-up anymore.

Looks like you have your setup absolutely screaming, good for you!

That speed test is very innaccurate. I used to use that, but I find it has way too much variance in the results.

Check out this speed test: http://206.170.44.66/NetTest.html it's much more accurate.

Check out www.speedguide.net

To get accurate test you have to clear your cache for each visit because if you dont your browser is pulling up the stored info on your hard drive giving you inaccurate speeds. Also beware most of these tweaks involve registry hacks so you MUST backup your registry before you go playing around in there

Cool

How timely...

I just today installed DSL - WOW! It's even faster than our corporate LAN.

Mike - you're invited to stop by anytime for a demo.

Tom in Tacoma (Close enough to the switch to qualify for DSL)

What did you do, buy a Superchip for that cable modem? Install Flowmaster throughput? Maybe change to higher ratio bus speed gears with limited packet slip? Did you try cold case air induction?

I hate computers!

You cannot "tweak" a cable modem. How do I know? Well that is my job, i install them all day. Your speed depends on the router and node and how many others are on the same speed or node. Right now, the max speed a cable modem can run is up to 3k/sec. So about a t3 speed. Are you ever going to see this? NO! You can run those speed test all day. They are not very accurate. Run it the first time after clearing your internet cache. That is about as accurate as you are going to get. www.2wire.com also has one that is way more accurate than msn.

Think about it, these tweaks you are messing with are not touching the modem. They are tweaking you windows to accept the information quicker and cache more often.

Unless you have a specific program to get into the ROM of the modem, you are NOT tweaking the modem.
