Noone should "hide" guns under the cushions of their couches or anywhere else for that matter. When you are not home guns should be locked up in a safe or at the very least have a trigger safety lock on it. It's bad enough to come home to someone robbing your house, it's even worse to get shot with your own gun!
All kidding aside, you can get a really nice single handgun safe for under $100. It can mount almost anywhere.

The shotgun is not so easy to deal with.
All of my guns are stored in a safe, except when I want one near me. WHEN ONE IS HOME, it really is not a good idea to leave it on the coffee table. Much better to have it concealed in ONE'S OWN HOME, where it is legal. If kept in plain sight, you are letting the bad guy know where to go to get it. I personally like the element of surprise.
In my life, I have lived next door to drug dealers in 2 separate homes. I have had a drive by shooting in front of a 3rd home. I had to go into LA to retrieve my sister's car during the LA Riots of 1992. The guy who drove me was a friend who is also a Deputy Sheriff.
The gun should be stored in a locked safe, except when you think you might need it.
BTW, in spite of my experiences, I still think I lived in good neighborhoods.

I think alot of you are on the right track, but could use a bit of clarification. If your looking to use a shotgun I would strongly recomend nothing less than 12 gauge and 00 Buck. Penetration with anything less is lacking to make a vital organ hit. 20 gauge birdshot may have alot of kinetic energy but its spread out into much smaller pellets. Also the intimidation factor of a shotgun is a joke, #1 no one ever died from the sound of a shotgun being racked, #2 the first sound a bad guy hears should not be racking the slide. A round should already be in the chamber ready to go, racking the slide simply gives away your position. If someones in my house unwelcome, they are there to do me or mine harm, the time for talk is over. http://www.theboxotruth.com/ has an amazing wealth of info on ballistics/penetration on all types of scenarios and is well worth the read.
Personaly my go to gun for home defense/ bumps in the night is my daily concealed carry handgun. Shotguns and other tools remain locked in a safe. The biggest point I would make is practice, practice, practice, practice. It wont make a difference if you have a .22, cannon or cruise missle if your not well versed in using it you may as well cower in the closet and wait for the police.
Short story about waiting for police, my parents house was broken into awhile back while my mother and 3 year old sister was home. At the point my mom noticed the three guys scoping out the house she was on the phone with my dad. She hung up called 911, while my dad called me. I had time to get out of bed get dressed and drive the ~2 miles to their house and still beat the police by 3-4 minutes. They are in a very well to do subdivision, not out int the boonies or projects.
* the thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own and should not be relied upon for any legal action, Results not typical, your mileage may vary, etc etc etc.

Yes your right racking the slide can give away your postion and your shotgun should already have a shell in the chamber.
But what if someone doesnt want to shoot up their house or kill someone dead in front of their family.
Then the inmidation factor of you racking the slide is gonna be heard. so if that inrtuder is no pro at it then most dumb robbers will turn and run.
when they know there 9mm pistol wont have to much effect when you can put holes the size of his head in the wall he might think twice.
Your right no one has ever died from hearing the slide but that will surely slow them down or stop them.
Plus some people dont want to keep a loaded shotgun with one in the chamber with only the saftey to stop it from going off if they have kids.
So maybe having 3 shells in the gun is good enough so when you walk out into the hall the racking of the slide will be all you have to do.
Myself on the other hand, I do keep my shotgun loaded but not one in the chamber because how hard is it to rack the slide? What takes a split second. I know some people will say that split second might mean you live and he dies or your die and he lives. But its not like im gonna walk around the corner with shotgun in hand just in a casual postion.
Thats why someone should have complete awareness that it is an intruder in your house and not just the dog diggin around in the trash.
Shotguns are well and good for home defense... as long as noone in your family is in a room between you and the intruder. 00 Buck will sail through sheet rock so you better make sure you don't shoot towards a room that someone may either be hinding in or sleeping in. Just a thought. That's why a lot of gun guys will tell you to use a heavy shot rather than buck.
