Lightbulb Two nuclear submarines collided deep in the Atlantic!

BRITISH and French nuclear submarines which collided deep under the Atlantic could have sunk or released deadly radioactivity, it emerged last night.

The Royal Navy’s HMS Vanguard and the French Navy’s Le Triomphant are both nuclear powered and were carrying nuke missiles
Between them they had around 250 sailors on board.

A senior Navy source said: “The potential consequences are unthinkable. It’s very unlikely there would have been a nuclear explosion.

“But a radioactive leak was a possibility. Worse, we could have lost the crew and warheads. That would have been a national disaster.”

Both ships made it back to port and no injuries reported. Neither nation is stating that any nuclear material was in any jeopardy. Typical hype from the Sun, the Brits version of the National Inquirer.

It doesn't change the fact that it happened. If I were France or GB I would deny anything happened also. Foreign Governments aren't always known for their transparency; unlike our own these days.

Still a huge problem... Makes you wonder what really happened. Two of the most sophisticated nuclear subs in the world mistakenly ran into each other? Sounds a little supsect to me.

Yea this seems kinda iffy to me too. They both come back with damage. Kinda reminds me of what happened in IronMan everytime something bad happened it was a "training exercise". I think something hostile happened because with all of the technology on those subs how can they collide?

Hmm...

Since they were able to get back to port, I'd have safe bet that there is no nuclear energy floating around deep in the Atlantic.

The way they design those reactors these days, it'd be pretty dang hard to break one open.

Most of the technology has been put into making the subs undetectible. The previous way of detecting a sub was to use its own sonar against it, or listen for the sound of engines. The subs no longer use "old" sonar, so you cannot use that method. The subs now use nuclear generators that make zero noise for power, so you cant listen for a traditional piston engines.

Well along as nobody was hurt-killed.

Ide say a 80-90% chance this was Human Error.

CRASHING a sub into one belonging to an ally is embarrassing enough at any time — but this couldn’t have come at a worse moment for Britain.

There are already tensions between us and the US over the Government’s failure to give our Forces what they need to win in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Those blunders have left President Barack (Hussain) Obama wondering how special his relationship with Britain really is.

Now a pile-up with the French makes it look like we were playing amateur night in mid-Atlantic. We simply cannot afford any more damage to our Forces’ reputation.
Ha Ha Ha I miss the SUN.

With the world's oceans as large as they are, I would put the odds of 2 subs randomly running into each other at around 500000000 trillion to one. Lol.

So you're saying there's a chance?

You guys seen "The Hunt For Red October"? One sub was probably shadowing the other, the sub being shadowed didn't know the other was there & made a sudden course change to see if anyone was behind them (clear the baffles) and the shadow sub didn't hear it in time & ran into the first. Probably going fairly slow, 10 knots or so. not a lot of speed, but a lot of mass to make a crunch.

I was a sonar tech on an LA class sub, and I can tell you that Red October was pretty friggin far from being technically accurate.

Those boats are both quiet, but not so quiet that they couldn't detect each other at close ranges. Their sonar crews both dropped the ball.

If both didnt know they were both there, thats scary. I wonder how many subs are in the waters that our subs dont know about either?

The truly funny thing here is that the French actually have a submarine (or any vessel for that matter) capable of attacking someone. Lord knows what happens when you **** off the French. I'd hate to think of the consequences!
