Getting whacked with a paddle was called, "the board of education, being applied to the seat of knowledge."
I received that application a few times myself!

I was a legend in Elementary school. The principal had a paddle named "Big Red". It was more like a cricket bat than a paddle though. Enough room on the handle for both hands, and about 3 feet of "business area". All painted red with red leather wrapped around the handle. He carried it around when he walked the halls, and looked menacing. Well, to make a long story short, he'd been the principal there for years, and my mother had him as a teacher when she was a little girl. Big Red had been a central feature in the memories of the children that went to school there for probably 20 years.... Mine was the *** it broke on.

this reminds me of my 10th grade Science teacher,

i graduated last year, so this was about 3 years ago.

the guy's been around for over 40 years, teaching there since the late 60's/early 70's , he was coach of the wrestling team and he was still pretty old school.

he would smack you with a ruler , grab you by the neck and throw books at you.

he only picked on the jocks / trouble makers , so no one cared

he was cool as hell, and every one loved him . he retired my last year there.

but, if this was any other teacher, they would have been fired lol.

Not completely off topic.

Has anyone else noticed that classes seem to be delayed or called off a lot more lately? Around here it seem like they make up all kind of excuses such as light fog, too cold, an inch or 2 of snow or the snow piles are too close to the street and not safe for kids to wait for the bus. It seems to be getting ridiculous anymore how are parents supposed to get to work when there are constant delays or closing?

They wouldn't have done anything to him if they found it. They were on our side most the time.

Your school'n did right by you.
Your background shows after so much talk on so many subjects.
Even when I dissagree with you I respect your opinion.

The other two percent of the time I fall out of my chair.

Quoted for truth....

Here in the Chattanooga area, we have plenty of rural/small farm areas and one local farmers decided to spread about 15 loads of chicken manure on his area this past weekend. Seems the HVAC system of the HS close to his farm started to pick up the smell and as such they board decided to close the school at noon.

It was probably due to the fact that 1/2 of class were the local farmer's children. By doing that, it made them go home to do their chores... like spread more manure.

I think I'd rather sit in class... than go out to the field with the tractor to spread that stuff.
