Nothing to do with trucks -NEED HELP!
Okay, so maybe that was a little loud. I am trying to find a place to rent a car when we go to visit my fiance's parents in Myrtle Beach. The problem is that I am only 22, so I am gonna have to deal with that whole under 25 tax. I wanted to know if anyone knows of a place that doesn't charge this rate, or if the know of a place where it is less than $10/day (lowest I have found). On the other hand, does anyone in SC want to rent me their f150 for a week
thanks in advance for any help. I love having this board for all sorts of general riff-raff.

I'd rent you mine but I need it for my job.
Anyway try one of those "rent a wreck" places or a local rental place that rents USED (normally 5yrs old or so) cars.
MUCH cheaper than renting a NEW car from the big chains.
A locally owned place is less likely to hit you for being under 25.

Thanks 54, that is a really good idea. Hey, I could give you the "wreck" and you could use that for work, then I could borrow your truck, right

Vocaire,
Try some of the local car dealerships. I rented one through a dealer in the past, and all they cared about was whether I was over 21. . .
Also, if you work for a company that has a contract with one of the rental companies, then you maybe able to rent it through work even though it is for personal use.

I don't know, but that rent a wreck sounds like a good deal for you but look at it from the prospective in-laws point of view. You're coming down to meet them, you really want to make a "good" impression. The last thing you want is to have them remembering you because the old car you rented, smoked up their driveway!!! Now on the other hand, looking at your signature, you've got a very nice truck. It might be worth the extra money it might cost to just drive down there and visit the car wash before driving up into their yard. There are times when saving a dollar could cost you big time latter on. Personally, if my daughter brought her "intended" over, you better believe I would be checking out his car. I tend to believe that a vehical is just an extension of the person. Of course this is just my own personal opinion. And even though I'm only about 1 1/2 hours from Myrtle beach, NO you can't borrow my truck either

Tina,
thanks for the thought, but I have already met her parents on previous occasions. And her step father has already seen my new truck (when he was in town). And I can tell you, they probably don't even remember what I drive (lucky if they remember what color). They are just not car people. Besides, her step father is more worried about me doing a bunch of computer work for him, and I can woo her mother by cooking for her, so I got that part covered at least
. But, it would still be cool for you to lend me your truck. I have never driven the Ford diesal with a stick (only a couple of 350's with auto, newer one and old body styled one) and I would love to see how it handled.
Dlb,
do you have and idea how I would go about finding a dealership that rents cars? I have never heard of this, but the idea intrigues me.

Just found this off of the Ford web site:
http://www.dealerconnection.com/rentalsystem/
It may be helpful, but they said most locations required you to be at least 25 although there were some exceptions. FYI, they did show a Myrtle Beach location. Good luck!

What a pain in the A$$ this is turning into. Looks like I will end up getting a Contour or equivalent from U-save. They are only $10 more a day for under 25. rent-a-wreck won't even rent to under 25... so much for what that place started out as

Why not fly?
If you do rent a car be sure it is not a Dodge. 2 weeks ago my girlfreind a few freinds and I rented a Dodge Caravnan from Rent-a-Wreck because it was the only place that would rent to us(I am 21), and this van was awful. Everythimg that could be wrong with this van was. The transmission was slipping the engine smelled like it was on fire and the alignment was way off. I really would have hated to be stuck somewhere between Dallas and San Antonio and had kept asking myself "why didn't we just fly?". I am not saying that the trip was a total loss but I wish that I had either flown or taken my truck.

Snow White, we are flying. I got a killer deal on tickets ($150 per person round trip) and that is why I am looking for a rental car. So that I have something to drive while I am down there (we are not staying with them).

Vocaire: Well, since they've already met you and they could care less what you're driving, why don't you just find the cheapest place that will rent something "dependable". Dependable does not have to be to your taste, you're only renting for those days you're down here. Besides, I've driven in Myrtle beach, the traffic is murder, especially when you want to go somewhere to eat!! We always try to be on the Harley and not take my truck. And even then, it's sometimes difficult to get around. What month will you be down here? Right now the temps have been up and down, shorts one day, sweater the next. But next week it's supposed to be Close to 80. Just rent yourself something to get around in and the both of you "Have a great Vacation".
And it's still "NO" on driving my truck
Unless you decided to drive up to Wilmington, then I would let you take it for a "test" drive

Man, is it really that tough to rent a car if you're under 25? When I was under 25, all they cared about was that you had a credit card and a license. Hell, I was renting cars when I was 18.
Have you tried any of the truck rentals places? There were times when I wasn't able to get a car and ended up renting a 12 passenger van or a p/up from a truck rental place.

Alright, so I never thought that this thread would turn into such a riot....
Tina,
thanks for the offer, I might take you up on it... My fiance's mother works in Wilmington, and if I end up in the area, you better believe you will hear from me
And I have pretty much decided to do exactly what you are talking about with the car. Only problem is that I am 6'3", so I refuse to get a car smaller than a certain size because I will be miserable.
Unfortunately I will be down there during "bike" weekend. But we will be there from thursday to thursday (May 11-18), so I am hoping that the crowds will die down during the week. I know what you mean about trying to be on the motorcycle. If we would have driven down I was going to put mine in the bed so that we could get around easier, but, such is life.
Dennis,
It is not that it is hard to find a car under 25 (at least not in SC), it is just that most places want $20 more PER DAY, which ends up doubling the price to rent the car. Oh well, life sucks sometimes.
