Be safe. No vacation is worth your life.

Wow, you guys are sure scared to wonder from resorts.

2 years ago I stayed in a resort near Tulum. During the stay we went shopping and bartering on 5th ave in Playa Del Carmen, Took the ferry to Cozumel and wondered around there, and me and my friend went into Tulum for some shopping, visited the Ruins and did some adventure quading/snorkling as well. Hole time we took taxi's to our destinations and freely roamed where we wanted too.. We were never concerned of our safety. Plan to go back this year.

Maybe it's because we're Canadians.

I was there 2 years ago and last December as well, like you said, Canadians everywhere you go, ruins, Playa Del Carmen etc. Never had any concerns for our safety. Heck, some of our day tours had americans on them, and they seemed to be doing just fine. I think people are not realizing that north Mexico is a lot different from the Cancun/Mayan Riveria/Tulum area.
