Have spent time in Cancun but definitely prefer Cabo San Lucas.A lot friendlier I think and better fishing!

My wife and I are going to Cozumel this year sometime with my family. They have been 3 years in a row and absolutely love it. So thats an idea for you. You can hop a ferry for like 50 bucks and take a 30 or 45 min drive to cancun if you want to. Ive been to mexico a few times and im not impressed......Now i did like the Carribean. St. Thomas is awesome!

why should we not go to the ruins??

There are 3-4 different ruin tours only one last 8 hours and the others are 2 hours or so. We have heard that one of the tours were pretty good.

This picture is not sun palace JFYI..Looks like Moon Palace

I am going to Sun Palace in a few weeks, I will let you know the details in a few weeks. I do know the pools are small, but the beach is nice, most beaches up tword town are washed away from Wilma. It is adults only and you can visit all the Palace resorts and use, drink and eat at thier hotels. Cancun is definitely great because you can leave the resort with mostly no problems, I have gone on foot all over Cancun, stumbled back from SR Frogs and Coco Bongos many of night. If you are looking for a big tropical resort type setting, you might not like Cancun. I would suggest the Iberostar Bavaro in Punta Cana and they just built a new resort called the Iberostar Grand hotel Bavaro, I would like to go there in the spring. The Sandals Whitehouse in Jamaica is great too. I myself don't care for Rivera Maya, but that is me, I would rather go to the above places..Other good hotels in Cancun are The Royal (not the Royal cancun), Aqua, ME (Formally Melia Turquesa) and Le Blanc (Pricey)

Ford#1 your correct, couldn't find my pic for Sun Palace. They are all nice, we went to all of them just to see the differences and eat [looking for good food].
This was my favorite, think it was the Beech Palace.

I would not hesitate to go to the ruins, I was down there in Dec 08 and went to three of them. Never feared for my safety once.

Costa Rica is nice but everybody need's to check out Cancun at least once. X-carat about 40 miles South of Cancun is real nice too.

I have not been to Cancun in over 20 years.
2 years ago I was in Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerta Vallarta.
3 years ago I was in in Ensenada and Juarez.
Cannot remember how long since I been to Rosarita Beach.

I really like going to the resorts in Mexico. I used to believe that as long as you stayed in the tourist areas in Mexico you would be OK. I am not so sure of that now.
I personally do not want to go back to Mexico until the crime is under control. Keep in mind that I have lived less than 150 miles from Mexico for most of my life. I think I was under 10 years old the first time my parents took me to Tijuana.
Keep an eye on the warnings from US State Dept. about travel in Mexico.
The Marine Corps General in charge of Camp Pendleton has issued a directive for his Marines to stay away from Mexico. Camp Pendleton is near San Diego, CA. If the marines are nervous, we should all think hard.

Be safe. No vacation is worth your life.
