2009 Hunting Thread

Well I couldn't seem to find the thread that had everyone's hunting kills, so since I officially killed mine Jan. 3rd, I guess I can start it off.

*Not trying to offend anyone by this, so if I need to remove it, please let me know*

My 101 lb. West Texas Doe.

Didn't know a 243 could do so much damage....

good job! Congrats. I wasn't able to make it out this year. I plan on heading out this fall for a northern Ontario Moose hunt.

Wow, nice feeder. I wish we could do that here in PA.

Yep, a 243 will tear up a shoulder big time. Small caliber bullet moving that fast tends to blow stuff up when it hits bone. That reminds me "take loins out of freezer to thaw when home for lunch". Mmmmmm venison.

Wow, hunting them over an automatic feeder, then "dragging" them out on a 4 wheeler....now THAT sure is HUNTING...

I am GLAD we can NOT do THAT in PA!

LOL! I was thinking the same thing. I hunt in NM where you have to low crawl through 8" grass a few hundred yards to get within a few hundred yards. Out there, the deer weigh 100#s at birth.

I'm not much of a hunter, but I was thinking the same thing... Where's the sport in that?

Sorry, I think you missed my sarcasm. However, if the state game laws allow baiting, then it is a perfectly legal kill. Hell, did you ever watch them bear hunt in Canada on tv. Why don't they just spackle themselves in Crisco and just start walking around. Sheesh!

I never stated that what he did was illegal, I am sure that it is legal, sadly...

What I meant by my post is that i hardly see the "sport" in hunting deer that way. Now, don't get me wrong, I am an avid hunter and have been for the last 19 years and plan to as long as I can walk out into the woods, so don't peg me as some tree hugger. However, I just don't see the point in sitting a hundred yards away from a automated feeder waiting for a deer to come have lunch. To me, it takes the "sport" out of hunting and pretty much turns it into a sure thing, as long as you can shoot straight.

To me hunting is about knowing what you are hunting, learning about the animal and applying your knowledge to your surroundings in hopes of coming home with a deer. Deer hunting to me will always be a foot of snow, frigid temperatures, frozen feet and hands, a warm cabin and spending time with my dad and good friends. Granted you can't control the weather or the terrain in Texas, but you can control the ways in which you pursue deer.

And to Shines, I invite you anytime to come to north central PA, provided you can bear the cold, to see how we Pennsylvanians really hunt deer.

I agree with you on the aspect of hunting. I would much rather be able to go out and track the deer myself, but unfortunately, that is almost unsafe here in Texas. You never know what you will walk up on, or who will mistake you for a animal. My grandfather was part of a hunting club in Southern Alabama, near Auburn, and they did it the old fashion tracking way. Unfortunately, he passed before he could ever take me out to experience it that way....

Bait them with a feeder than kill them? So that's what hunting is about. Kinda sucks

Unfotunately that's all we can afford time and $$ wise. We used to have a deer lease, but when the guy up and sold it, we didn't have anything. This is the 3rd deer I have killed, and the 1st one in about 6-7 years.

Wasn't trying to offend you guys. I'm sorry about the post. I can remove it if it makes y'all uncomfortable....

Wow, if not knowing what you are going to walk up on or being shot by another hunter causes people to hunt deer this way....wow, just wow, is all I have to say.

That sucks you never got to hunt with your pap. My dad taught me how to hunt and I intend on passing that down some day.

Maybe you should look at doing some traveling to hunt. I make the trek back "home" to PA each year for deer season. Costs me an arm and a leg, but it is so worth it! Much more relaxing than any amount of time I have spent lying on a beach or traveling through Europe hands down!
