I've been running Win2K Pro, Release Candidate one, since the beginning of October. It's been very reliable (the only blue screens I've had from it were my fault, from enabling "shut down the computer if event logging is disabled" then disabling event logging.) It's not very friendly with my Gravis Phoenix joystick though. That might be fixed in the final release version. I'm waiting for the price to come down a little first.

Windows 2000 is a NT setup, correct? That would mean I couldnt run my many computer games on that.
How do you like it so far?

Its Built on a NT format. It gives you the Choice of Fat32 or NTFS Format though. While reading about it, Microsoft said it supports Directx7 for games like quake3 and such. NT wouldn't support Directx6 I think. This Is the Way things are gonna go from now on so I wouldn't be supprised if Game Manufacters start designing their software to work with it. If the software Does have a problem. I don't know yet.

Windows 2000 made the news just a few days ago..a few bugs and security holes..which is nothing new from Microsoft. They expect to have a patch out in June to address most of these problems.

I am interested to know just what these 'problems' are before I aquire a copy of it.

Win 2000 is I think, supposed to be a melding of NT and 9x. A more stable 98 or a better supported NT, depends on how you want to look at it. Like mentioned it supports directX 7(NT only officially support DX 3) and should support opengl no problem. It microsoft's new baby so I'm sure driver support for video, sound, etc should be very quickly if not already avaliable. I'm sure there will be some compatibilty issues with some games, but they also should be quickly worked out. I'm sure it will throw a fit about old DOS games that want too much control of hardware just like NT does now, but recent and new games will probably be supported.

What's your system, ccla? I was wondering if 2000 is a big of resource hog as NT, or if Microsoft was able to stop the trend it started with 95, then 98 of requiring a more and more powerful machine to run it well. I know beta 3 of NT5 required at least 64 megs of RAM just to install. Keep us updated on how things go...

Exclamation

I heard that it has something like 58,000 bugs in the software. Hmmm, just like Microsoft, always jumping before looking !!! What are they scared of, there is no one that can currently hurt them, so it is not like they can take their time and get rid of the bugs.

My system with 2000 on it has Dual 266 processors with 128 megs ram. 2, 3 gig scsi drives. I had Nt 4.0 before and was slow as molasses. This is much faster. MUCH FASTER.

Just installed it last weekend on my PII-400 (gotta have something to do while waiting for the new truck to get here). Definitely a lot more stable than 98 and games appear to work (at least Quake III), just make sure your hardware is supported before you start the install.

Things seem to run a lot faster than NT 4 and about the same speed as 98.

ccla - How's the multi-processor support in 2000 compared to NT 4? I'm considering putting another processor in since I've already got the dual board. BTW, I agree about the install...one of the easiest OS installs I've ever done. All my hardware drivers were included on the install disk which must mean it's time to upgrade ;-)

Cool

Have you guys heard of Linux? Thats what I run mostly. Talking about being stable!!! But there arent many games for it but there will be. Someone said that MS had no real competeion. I strongly disagree with that. Linux is moving up! I think MS is really worried about it. The guy with the dual processor should try linux.

I'll stick to the main street. Why would I hamstring my options on games, programs, devices etc. It's like buying a MAC
