Windows 2000 (aka NT 5) isn't the last iteration of Windows 9x. There is still "millenium" due to be released sometime this year.

Besides, you guys should come over to the dark side... OpenStep! Cubes rule!

Joshman is right,
Linux Is fast becoming a pain in MS side. With the use of X-windows, and the fact that Linux is free, and the fact that it runs as fast on a 486 as windows does on a p500. It is very stable and alot of companies are now using it for server platforms already.

It's good to hear that 2000 seems less bloated than NT. Also good to hear that there are other Linux users on the board. I personally feel that for a stable server platform, Linux is the way to go. If for no other reason the inherent instability you get when the GUI is build into the kernel. But for an everyday machine, especially if you want to play alot of games, Windows is just easier to deal with. It of course supports more games and currently, at least on the 3D front, is faster because of better drivers. The next version of MesaGL should help to close that gap and the fact I have an AMD chip with it's poor floating point has something to do with it too probably. I used only Linux for awhile and after spending alot of time finding and installing a truetype font server to get Netscape fonts to look decent, playing with mapping some registers to cache specific memory locations on my video card to try and make Q3 faster and waiting for the Linux client of Unreal Tourn. to come out, I finally gave up and went back to Windows. Wow for some reason typing that made me want to install Linux on my main machine again. I think I might blow away a partition tonight and make a dual boot box. Anyway Linux rocks, but just isn't for your "average joe" yet. Another thing, yes Linux might run well on a 486 w/16 meg RAM, but the new Window Managers/desktops will still struggle on that machine. If you try to run an Enlightenment/Gnome or KDE environment it's going to eat up resources just like Win. and run about as slow. But the great thing is instead you can throw something like Windowmaker up and still run fast, but you lose the "ease of use" of the others. Anyway, I could go on for hours I think but I need to at least pretend to do some work...

I heard 63,000 bugs, but wouldn't that be far better than Windows 98 version 1?

Question

My understanding is that windows 2000 is designed to take the place of NT and that windows millenium edition will be the preferred upgrade for most windows 95&98 users. So I think I will wait.
Joshman, I have been considering trying Linux, do you have any helpful insight or any recommendations where to start? Fortunately I have a few computers so I can try it on one while leaving the others intact.

Thumbs up

Just installed Windows 2000 Pro on my 300A celery (clocked to 464). Loving it, used to run Win98-SE. I like NT5 more because my programs like photoshop + illustrator etc... run so much faster and with no bugs so far.

Need to change my old SoundBlaster 16 ISA to SB live though, but that card is old and is really big in my somewhat modern computer.

But if you use win98 for games and internet and minimum work. Do not get win2000 pro, it probably isn't worth the price for you. It also takes up 600mb of Hard Drive space and I wouln't run it under 128mb of ram.

I have been using it for only a week sofar but I'm sure it will do fine. My computer runs 24hrs a day.

I'm glad Ford can't run their company like microsoft. Imagine having to pay the price of another truck to let someone eles use it

Anybody try BeOS?? Mac O.S 8.6 has many more bugs than win98... I use macs at work.

mkrieger I use RedHat 6.1. I am far from a master at it, but I can use the OS. The way I learned was reading, and not being afraid to destroy Linux. hehe I am serious though, if you install it on a linux only computer, dont be afraid to mess around! You can teach yourself alot of stuff doing that. I hang out on DALnet #linuxgroup channel. They are very helpful. Also there is alot of information on their web site, www.linuxhelp.net

I don't know who said 2k runs better/faster/whatever than NT4. Definately false... I was running NT4 & SQL Server 7 on a Pro 200, 64 Megs of RAM and it ran fine. I installed 2k on it and it was slower than a chevy. We did install RC3 once with a beta of Office 2k to see how it went, and it wasn't too bad...

Bloated? Oh yes, W2k is as bloated as ever. The level of complexity is probably about 3 times that of NT 4.0 and about 10 times of W98. Installation is very user friendly, but it can get complicated quickly as things are added on IMHO. I've been developing on NT since '96, and it's just another operating system. It's great for the everyday user.

From these posts and the fact min req. are 64meg RAM it seems that maybe >64 meg is needed for 2000 to run well. Maybe it has better multiprocessor support also.

So does anyone know anything more about the "Millinium" version that supposed to be coming out later this year. Is it really supposed to be new or is it basically going to be Win98 Service Pack 3 that Micro$oft is marketing as "another Edition" so that they can charge for it?

Now that I continue to think about it I think I'm going to rebuild the old 486 I have sitting around to use as my firewall,ip masq, and web server. Take the 166 and make it a windows machine for my wife, and blow away windows entirely on my main box. If a game I want to play doesn't run natively or under Wine, then I guess I just don't need to play it. Not that anyone should care, but just thought I'd share.
