Talking Old flame...

First of all, I have been swamped lately and not had much time for the internet. 'Tis the season in Florida for working 14 hrs. per day. How is everyone? And welcome new members!

I used to own a 1984 Toyota Celica GT hatchback with the 22RE engine and 5 speed. I bought it from the original owner in 1996 for $2000 I think. The car was for my girlfriend I had at the time. When we broke up she left the car with me. I drove it for a year and had it with me when I worked in Atlanta in 96. It was a great car. Did 110 mph on I-20 no prob. and still got 30 mpg. I sold it when I returned to Florida in late 96 to a co-worker's ex-wife. Now more than three years later, I ran across the former co-worker a few days ago. I went to his house to check out some old cabinets he was looking to sell and there it was! My old Celica sitting in the carport with no tag and a rusty hatch (it was mint when I sold it to his ex). He told me it sat there for a year and a half after it stopped running one day. He is not good at maintaining cars, in fact he doesn't. He drives them until they stop and gets another. I offered him 200 bucks for it and he took it. I had it towed to my mechanic for a new fuel pump and it lives again. I am gonna clean it put a new hatch on it and drive it. It is still a great car and reliable as hell when maintained. A very fun car to have around since it is a five speed (it is the first and the last stick I have had in three years he he) It only has 126,000 miles on it now and is still in good shape overall, just dirty.

Kinda neat to own the same car twice. I am gonna keep it this time. I will add it to my sig. I hate new Toyotas but those old Celica's 82-86 and Supras 82-86.5 were great cars. I've had three in all, this one twice.

For $200.00 you can't go wrong.
It amazs me how ppl don't take care of thier stuff sometimes.
I could write a term paper on how ppl take care of thier TVs and VCRs.
Some ppl bring in a 10yr old TV for repair that doesn't have a scratch on it, while others bring in a 2-3yr old TV that is covered in nicotine and grease(I guess thats what that slimy stuff is on the TV, I really would rather not know)beat up, cigarette burns on the top and full of roach turds.

Cool that you got your Toy back, when I am done with something, it is really done. I usually gave them away to some one who needed one, if they still ran.
I used to buy cars that didn't run for cheap and then fix them. Usually they needed less than $50 in repairs, like plugs, fuel pump, fuel filter, or carb rebuild. I got so good at it, I could rebuild a carb in 30 min.
I also used to buy cars that ran, but the body was gone, and I would pull the motor.
I paid for my last devorce by selling 2-454's and a 350!

54, I wondered how a TV could be abused untill I read more-YUK!

Seacrow: I too have owned 2 celica GT hatchback 5 speeds. One a 77 and one a 81. The 77's battery was always going dead on me but I could get anyone to push it and it cranked right up. The 81's engine blew up at 40k (it was 1year old) and Toyota and I fought until they replaced it. I sold that one to my brother when I had over 100k on it. He ended up selling it too and a few years later I spotted it again, still going strong. I liked both of those cars but now I'm so used to driving a truck that every time I'm in something that small, I cringe. I keep thinking someone's gonna hit me or just drive over me. Good luck with your new/old car It should be lots of fun restoring it.

I owed the same 69 Bronco twice.
I had it for the Blizzard of 1978, made a ton of money plowing with it. With all the money I made with it, I bought a 78 F250 and sold the Bronco to a friend.
The next winter we got no snow, when that winter was over my friend decided to buy a new truck so I bought the Bronco back for less than I sold it to him.
The next winter we got a ton of snow again, man that little Bronco with a str six plowes awsome.
I first paid $500.00 for it, then $400.00 the 2nd time. It must have made me $5000.00 each of those two winters(what a investment). Sold it a 3rd time for $500.00 to a boat yard, they cut it up and made a yard truck out of it.
It is still running to this day, 31 years old.

seacrow,

I have an '86 Supra (85 style before the redesign). I ordered it from Toyota in August 1985 and it arrived at the dealership in March 1986. I got lucky because it was the last vehicle of that model year to be registered in Canada. I have 280,000 kms on it currently and am getting the the complete drivetrain rebuilt back to original specs. It has been stored each and every winter and doesn't have any rust on it. It has run flawlessly since new and has never broken down and has truly been an excellent and reliable car. People have offered me up to $7000cdn for it but I have always said "No" because it is my baby and the longest relationship I have had.....
I will never part with it and have absolutely no complaints with its reliability. Best of luck in the restoration!

Wayne

Wayne,
I had an 83 Supra that had 265,000 miles on it. I bought it from some guy that smacked a pole with it and I used it as a pizza delivery car for a year or so.
Tina, I also had a 78 Celica GT coupe, it was a good one too.

I am not restoring this car, I am only cleaning the gum off of the paint from this guys kids and I am gonna clean and ozone the interior. It is still at the mechanics place and should be finished in the next day or so.

I had a 79 LTD that carried me faithfully through years of college and other stages of abuse. Sold it to the mechanic who knew the car, his daughter drove it to school for a while. Hadn't seen it for about 2 years, then saw it getting prepped for a derby! I thought about stopping by to identify the remains, but kept on driving, hoping that if that was my old baby, that she would forgive me for her demise

Hey Don C,
You reminded me - I had a 1978 F250 also!! What a truck. It was a 2wd and I thought I wanted a 4wd Bronco in 85, so I got one (which I still have and love). But I always wanted a good 3/4 ton big ci engine, so now I have my 99 F250 SD. Anyway, thanks for reminding me.

I remember racing an RX7 in 1981 from a stoplight. He stayed close, but when the lane went from 2 to 1, I was looking at his front-end (not far away either). But what I really remember is his license plate: BITCHEN.

I felt pretty good.....

Any toy with only 120,000 miles is just past brake in. I owned 2 toy 4x4 before my f-150 both where very good trucks. They go along way.

Man...those 78 Ford 3/4 tns...now those were trucks. Mine is a mid model year 77 and one of the first low boy 3/4 tons off the assembly line...nothin could stop that thing. 347,000 miles later she still runs and drives like a champ (of course not the same engine...cuz that would be silly)
