Post Got a strange question here... Suggestions??

I have an odd question.. Here goes.

I would like to mount my locomotive horn on my 2000 SuperDuty. I used to strap it to the roof rack of my Explorer (especially fun before a Purdue football game!) On occasion, I would strap it up there just to have fun, and I have put it INSIDE the bed of the 250, but it really requires a more lofty perch, up where it can be seen and heard! Other drivers have a tendancy to ask you to blow a horn that big when you drive by with it on your roof!

Anyway, my question is this: I don't want to get a rollbar, rather I'd like to use something that goes in the stake pockets, and is removeable. Does anyone have any thoughts on what I could do? I've thought about having a custom-made rack welded up, but if there's something out there that I can adapt, such as a ladder rack or a headache rack, I'd rather do that. The horn weighs 20 pounds itself, but the wind load requires a sturdy mount... Don't let me down guys, you always have great ideas! (Maybe I need to get a life?!)

A custom mount will probably be your best bet.

Why dont you just make a bracket of some sort and put magnets on it so you can mount it almost anywhere and remove it with out any holes.......be sure to put felt on the bottom of the magnet though.....Dave

Thumbs up

Thanks for the response!!! I can always count on the members of f150online to answer a question, no matter how strange!

Andthensometoo: mE sTraNge? never!!! (So maybe I've inhaled some exhaust fumes, but at least they're FORD fumes!)

DAVENSA, ccla: I had not thought of using magnets, although I don't think I want to trust my horn to them. I want it bolted down good, so it doesn't "sprout legs" when I run into the quickie mart to get my Dr. Pepper!

Jimb, Steve g: Two more good ideas that I had not even thought of! That's why I love this site!

J-C: I was able to get mine from a collector in Roanoke, VA. They are hard to find though! (legitimately and legally, that is!)

Claudia: Another Nathan P-5??!!! That's the same horn I have, although mine isn't pink! Seriously, though, when I figure out how to do this, I'll let you know, because these horns simply can't sit in the bed of a truck!

They belong up high, where they can be seen and heard!

Lightbulb

Get a front mounted receiver and mount the horn on a removable winch mounting plate or something similar.

I ski and the ski rack that clamps on to the roof is very sturdy you could modify a ski rack or a bike rack they have brackets on them and you could take it on and off with ease. Some a thule model have a wind defelector on the front that might help alos. Hope that helps

Question

Ike,
I have a question for you...
Where did you get a locomotive horn?????

BTW - the ski-rack would be my first choice, the custom mount my second.

Good Luck with those "boiler makers".

Exclamation

Far be it from me to in force the law but in most states they are illegal. I work on diesel semi and i have put them on for the owners but a few have had the police give them a ticket for them, A very large ticket at that , They say that it is too loud and can cause a accident it start'ls (spelling) other vehicles. I looked it up in the D.O.T. manual but could'nt find ant thing but it only has spec on what you have to have to be d.o.t. legal verse illegal. I think it cool but may be you shoud'nt blow it when you are behind a cop car.

Are there any members here that are police?? may be they can tel you more.

I wouldnt want you to go to all this work and then have it taken away .

Never had a problem myself. Had police drive by and not give me a second glance.

Besides that, since I'm not doing anything wrong, I could care less about the DOT.

STEVE: As long as you are not impeding the flow of traffic, or disturbing the peace, there is no justification for stopping someone just because they have train horns. You'd have to be DOING something with them, like you said: Blowing them! You can haul 'em all ya want....
