There is a small space but the trigger guard locks into the retention just like it is suppose to, you can't pull it out of the holster even with the thumb break undone without twisting in towards your body to release it from the the lock. I'm not even sure the make a drop holster specifically for the XD yet, at least I haven't seen one. A "drop holster" is what is on my duty belt, the ride position is slightly lower then the waistline, and it hangs about 2 inches down, unlike a normal or "high ride" holster which sits exactly at the waistline.
The 3rd picture is a tactical or leg holster. As you can see, it has 2 straps that attach around the thigh and one strap that attaches to your belt. My tactical holster is specifical made for the XD.

I thought about a paddle holster but I have a fobus for my 226R and it makes the gun too visible.

For CC I use the Crossbreed Supertuck for my XD 45 and love how it fits.I can wear a denim vest over my t shirt and it conceals nicely. Wear it all day and no sore spots.

I get most of my equipment from a local place called Calvada Police Equipment, if they don't have it I look on Galls.com or Quartermaster.

I've got the xd gear holster that came with my gun. It seems to work pretty well, though I've only carried it on the range with it. If I were to carry conceled I would have an IWB holster. I like Don Hume because they have a clip that I could use if I didn't have a belt. Also looked at TENNESSEE HOLSTER COMPANY they have good stuff, and are located local to me.

Good luck with your choice.

I wear a crossebreed supertuck. Made by a company called Crossbreed Holsters. Best holster I have ever owned or worn, period.
