F150 is the top selling vehicle of 2008
I just pick the receiver up and make vocal tones to dial the numbers.

1. More and more people are buying used cars.
2. People don't have a lot of money.
3. The automakers screwed themselves by offering $5k off deals.
The little guys, like me, have to pay on a truck that I had no choice in getting power windows, locks, v8 engine and an automatic... now that is communist. And that goes for a lot of people that I know of.
Heck, a friend of mine would love a new pickup truck, but first off, he doesn't care for all of the features these new trucks have, and secondly, there are no options in his price range because of all the added junk they've attached.
Sometimes people need to take a step back, and look around them.
The rich/wealthy still win; the middle class and poor do not.
Now I'm not trying to be picky... but I just want something simple, no frills, no strings attached type of truck. The new '09 XL's have more features than my truck... and cost more. Why should I have to be forced to be burdened with what Ford "thinks" is what "I" want?
I guess when it comes to Ford and other manufacturers, majority rules. Which is a horrible way to go about business for something that has a high price tag attached.
Back in the day, an automobile when bought, was supposed to be made to the customer's specifications. Now it's the automakers telling the customer what to drive. Which is like me telling you, that you can't live in your own house. Now that's horrible.
I can see where you are coming from, but with:

What's terrible is that you get what you want... but for the average Joe that wants to have a pickup that is simple and easy to maintain, has to now deal with more junk to go wrong. But then again... most just bring theirs to an overpriced service joint. Which is sad.
So far the only reason my truck has ever been seen in a service shop was due to a warranty related issue. If I didn't have the warranty... guess what? I would have my Haynes book out and the truck apart in my garage. If I can't figure something out, I ask around. Owning a truck is the pride of working on it yourself. A truck has always meant to be a simple but heavy duty piece of machinery -- like a tractor. It was never intended to be used like a car. Furthermore, the truck has been labeled as a great misconception of what it is. Which is why I laugh.
The original truck was designed for the max of 2-3 people, 8 ft bed, a heavy duty engine, frame, suspension, and usually a long throw manual transmission, and was designed to last 500k easily no matter how much you beat on it. Plus there was no power locks, windows, or even a/c. It was meant for picking up or hauling stuff. Hence the name "pickup truck".
These new trucks are like what happened to the Hummer. Sad, but it's a clear example.
Just my 2 cents.

Also, I have to disagree with you on what trucks were intended for, maybe originally they were only for work use, but then someone figured out that people couldn't afford to buy a car AND a truck, so they tried to mix form and function so they could keep the business. It is a means of transportation that is capable of towing and hauling. Regardless of how comfortable or how many people it can haul, it is a means of transportation.
Get off your high horse, give me my Lariat and if you don't want a loaded one, then don't buy it. You will be in the minority of people who buy new vehicles.
The fact that we had the gas crisis that we had this year, the screwed up economy and a full-size truck is still the best-seller? Wow, that's amazing, and is a real testament to what people feel like they absolutely need.
