Post I need your opinion. Tire related

I had an interesting experience at the tire store today. I want to get a set of BFGoodrich All Terrain TA KO 275/70/16 (its a new size for BFG AT) on American Racing wheels. When I asked the man at the counter for a price on this set, he got really upset. He told me if I put that set on my truck I would ruin every thing Ford had worked so hard for. He said BFG AT's would cause my truck to wonder all over the road and I would turn my truck into a tank. He said I would ruin the ABS because of the tire height. A 275/70/16 is not as tall as a 265/75/16 witch is a common size tire on any full size pick up. He said if I had to go with that size tire, I should go with Michelin. I have only heard good things about BFGoodrich, but I would like any input that any one has about BFG or Michelin, or about this tire size on a Ford. This guy is not much of a sales man, at one point he was so mad, I thought he was going to try to fight me.

Thanks
Nick

I think I'd be looking for another Tire Shop! I have 275/60R-17's that came stock on my 4X2 Truck! Mounted on 17" rims, I can't see where the height would be that much different! Sounds to me like a guy who just doesn't like BFG Tires! Mine are Goodyear, but I've never heard anything bad about BFG! Just my thoughts!

Nick, First, I'm not an expert on this subject, but what this guy has told you doen't seem to make alot of sense. In my opinion I believe Michelin tires to be among the best, not that BFGoodrich aren't a very good tire also. What size of tire came on your truck from the factory? If your truck came with 235/70-16 it is almost an 8% increase in size (when the speedo says 65 you will be doing 70), if your truck came with 255/70-16 you are talking a little less than 4% difference (when the speedo says 65 you will be doing 67.5.
Also you might want to talk to somebody from each of the tire companies to see what they recommend. What ever you do, good luck.

I have your answer!!
[BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO Maximum Value Policy
BFGoodrich has established a tire industry-first "Maximum Value Policy" (MVP) distribution strategy for its new All-Terrain T/A KO light truck tires.
With shipments of the All-Terrain T/A KO beginning on May 1, 1999, the MVP will protect the high-equity position of the All-Terrain T/A KO in the market by establishing a suggested minimum retail price and by allowing distribution of the product only to authorized dealers who respect the policy. To comply with the MVP and maintain product access, dealers must not advertise or sell below the suggested minimum retail prices. BFGoodrich will immediately and indefinitely discontinue selling All-Terrain T/A KO to dealers that violate the MPV guidelines.
Since the BFGoodrich MVP program will establish suggested retail prices and does not allow an opportunity for The Tire Rack to provide equivalent delivered and/or installed prices to our customers, we have chosen not to offer the All-Terrain T/A KO.
The MVP for the All-Terrain T/A KO does not apply to any other BFGoodrich tires and we will continue to offer other BFGoodrich's other light truck and performance tires.]

I wanted lower profile tires when I got my new rims but the salesman told us it would screw everything up. Why can't they just let you get what you want? And don't ask me why Cooper's.

Cool

Okay, It has thicker sidewalls than most all other tires. I.e. it will ride stiffer since the tires have less sidewall "give". You might experience a slight increase in road noise due to the aemi-aggressive tread pattern. But ya know what, who cares.....

I put 31" BFG Mud Terrains on my Dad's '94 Bronco. I didn't notice a difference in the ride, but I picked up on a little more road noise from the tires. Note: they have thinner sidewalls than the A/T's. Everybody I know of that owns the A/T's loves them, and recommends them to everyone.

I thought of sticking with Goodyears, but I like to have traction when it rains, so that means NOT buying Goodyears.

Yep, I got those Goodyears off as quick as I could. They were almost as bad as the Generals that were on my last F150. And Generals suck, big time.

My brother worked sales at a NTB store. The way they work their sales commission can cause the salsman to push you into a tire with a higher commission. I think in the past he has told me Michelin had one of the better commissions.

As long as all four tires are the same size, the ABS should work fine.

NSS,
Last friday I traded my oem goodyears in on a
set of BFG allterrain T/a K O's.With 300 miles on the Goodyears.same size (265/70r/17).I've run this tire on all my trucks for years.I now have about 300 miles on this setunder my 2000 F-150 IMHO your tire dealer is lying to you to pad his pockets by selling a lesser tire with a higher profit margen. yes bfg does controll retail prices as Andthensometoo explained. But the bit about wandering is bull.... I have noticed no change in handling or stablity at any speed from off road to 80mph on the interstate.
If your willing to pay the fixed price for BFG a/t's you will be happy with the ride and stability
Steve

Thank you for the responces everyone.

54regcab, the BFG web site says they can be mounted on 7-8.5in wide rims. I saw prices on the internet for $159.99 a tire. At Mr. Happy's tire store he gave me a price of $1400 for a set of the tires and the 16x8 AR rims that I want.

And..2, That was an interesting bit of info you posted, I had to read it a few times to understand it, but I am a little slow in the reading comprehension dept.

That salesman is so full of crap. I have the BFG's and love em. I've had mine since August, they are a little noisier but not really that noticable. Performance wise, I have alot more traction than with my OEM Wranglers. I still spin on wet pavement bt it is next to impossible on dry pavement. With the Wranglers I could light em up with no problem.
As far as the ABS, isn't it on the wheel not the tire? Maybe I'm wrong but if it is then what difference would it make what tire size you have? Some guys in here are running 305's and some even larger with no trouble.

Go with the BFG's. I put BFG AT KO on my truck 3 days after I bought it. It still had the factory P255/75R16. I got the 285/75R16 on the factory rims, and I think my truck handles better than stock, despite sitting 1.5" taller.

Obviousley the BFG legal department has reviewed their new policy but I thought it was illegal for a manufacturer to set retail prices!

Anyway, as many good things as I have heard and experienced with BFG tires I am really put off knowing they are "controlling" retails. This countries economy is founded on competition - I say steer clear of the TKO's.
