Wink 27 mpg's!!! No joke!

I'm grinning ear to ear. This is no joke, real deal, I just got 27+ mpg's last fill up. Tank after tank of getting 16's and even a lowly 15, this is really something. Okay, this is really the best, best, best case scenario, but it is still way over the highest EPA ratings. Here are the conditions.

Starting: Lethrop, CA (South of Stockton)
Destination: San Bruno, CA (South of San Francisco)
Route: Highway 5 South, Highway 205 West, Highway 580 West, Highway 880 South, Highway 92 West, Highway 101 North, Highway 380 West, Highway 280 North.
Miles Travelled: 77.7 miles
Gallons Consumed: 2.8 gallons
Fuel: 76 Station 87 Regular located in Lethrop
Time: 10-11:30 pm
Temperature: Cold
Wind: No crosswind noticed
Route Description: Mostly flat freeways, a slope after Tracy, probably less than 3 miles non-freeway, crossed San Mateo bridge
Approximate Average Speed: 60-65 mph
Approximate Average RPM: 1750 rpm
Truck Specs: 99 F-150 SuperCab XLT 4x2
V6 4.2L Auto 3.55 rear
6000 GVWR
GlassTite CamperShell
Wrangler Tires
K&N Filter
20K miles
Cargo: None
Estimated Weight: 4800 lbs

There you have it. That is my best ever recorded mileage. What's yours and under what condition?

Good_Guy, I have no doubt you got in the twenties. I've only checked my mpg after using at least 3/4 tank. I've often wondered while sitting in traffic, how much higher my mileage would be without the sitting/going slow part. I got 19.5 once on a trip but, once again that was a 350 mile trip. If I nursed it between two gas stations 80 miles apart I'd have done alot better.

Don't let these guys give you a hard time. Just ignore them and have another brownie.

This was a non-stop 99% freeway trip at a moderate speed, and no hard acceleration. Clear traffic, only slowed on stoplights and toll bridge. I just hope that the pump registered correctly. Waited for two clicks before disengaging as I always do. The brownies had nothing to do with it. Maybe the burrito with extra beans... My best mixed driving was 19+ on SF to LA overloaded by 600 lbs. Worst was 14.something, when my dad got pissy and drove like hell, putting the pedal past the floor for less than 5 miles.

I once got 22.5 gallons into a 20 gallon (GMC S-15 Jimmy) tank at a one-pump general store out in the boonies of north central Wisconsin. Old farts sitting outside whittlin' and drinking Orange Crush---the whole bit. Lady inside says "I just don't understand it, nice young fella from the state was out to fix the pump just last week." I believe your story. Enjoy the brownies.

I am thinking of changing my story. I seem to get wrong readings on the pump, or it may have disengaged too early. The 27 is really high. When I recorded it, it ran on 76 station 87 gas. Then I filled it up again with Arco 87's. But by 1/4 tank, I got really horrendous mileage barely broke into the 90's and this was with absolutely no load. Substantial around the city, but never ever got this low. So I reckon the Arco pump disengaged way too early so I didn't get full tank last time and might be derprived of 15 or so miles. Even if I got a gallon under, that is still not bad. 77 miles/3.8 gallons = 20.3 mpg, which is much more realistic. I can take it when instruments fib a little, but really hate it when they downright lie in your face.

Don't take it the wrong way but I think Good Guy has way too much time on his hands to log all those highways and biways and the amount of fuel consumed. As for me I usually don't worry about gas mileage, if I were I would have got a GEO or something, so I just fill up when I get down around an 1/8th of tank and don't worry about it, more often than not though the low fuel light comes on before I get there. Last time I checked I recieved 15.7 mpg.

Hey, when it takes you more than 30 bucks to fill up a tank, you will worry about your mpg's. I know trucks are no mpg queens, but getting the most out of it is my concern. It really is very annoying to get mpg's that low, especially on the most economical of the three. That's why I pushed for the V-6, has 1 mpg more than the 4.6l(supposably), cheaper, and because I was stupid at that time. If I get that sort of mileage (15-16's) in a 5.4l then I wouldn't bitch and complain because its expected. On a V-6, I expect 18-19's because of the EPA ratings telling me what to expect.
