I get my roadrunner cable modem hook up Monday Nov 1st. Cost thru local cable Co. is $45 a month, how does that compare with the rest of the country. Can't wait (Hate those 28.8 connections because of bad phone lines). Up to 700 miles on the truck - still on my honeymoon I guess, yesterday was my wife and my 15th wedding anniversay - she got flowers, the truck got a kiss.

You guys ready to have your eyes pop out? I pay $32.50 directly to the phone company for the ADSL line/modem PLUS another $50 to the ISP. Yup... Over $80 a month. AND, I had to sign a 1 year contract to get that price. Otherwise, it would cost closer to $100 a month.
Cable isn't available yet, but I don't think I'll switch over. ADSL is a lot more stable and secure than cable and when the power goes out, I can still stay connected while cable goes down. Phone company and my ISP has emergency power. The cable company doesn't.

If the power goes out how are you going to power the computer? LOL
Do you have emergency power? LOL
BTW ADSL is avalible here too at the same price as cable modem.
ASDL was costly but came down in price to remain competive with cable.
Are you "on line" instanly with ASDL?
What about the "line noise" issue with unshielded wiring?

Yup... Got two gensets always ready to go.
Yes, ADSL is always on. All I have to do is start up my browser and mail reader and I'm instantly online.
Price for ADSL is also dropping here. The phone company was originally charging $40 a month for 1/3 the speed I have now. Of course, it cost me a $35 reconfig. fee to switch to a higher speed so I can save a few bucks a month. LOL. Sort of like my Waldenbooks card. I paid $10 to renew the card so I could save 60 cents on a book.
I've been on ADSL for about 4 months now and have NEVER had any down time. The modem was included in the $99 installation fee. It's mine to keep after I fulfill my 1 year contract, otherwise, it's a $400 item that they rent for something like $12 per month.
If I didn't need the security and dependability, I would have gone with a cable modem if it was available.

I have been using www.NetZero.net for a year now and there are not many problems with it. I have even seen them advertise on TV lately. They too have the aforementioned advertising banner but is is easily ignored. There are at least two other free ISP's out there but I do not recall their names, I think I saw one advertised on this site. I am now useing PowerNet, a local company, only because I won a computer from them and they gave me a free year of internet service with it.
