Did you order that truck, or go off the lot?
I'm not sure, but I believe both KBB and Edmunds to be fairly accurate. Yes, ford probably does make 15k on a navigator; what the deal is, the dealer doesn't get the vehicle for what it costs to manufacture it... I work for an air conditioner factory; as an example, a unit that costs us $750 to build, sells to the distributor for approx. $1000; in turn, they sell it to a dealer for approx. $1200; the dealer sells it for $1500. Most everyone on the board understands that this is how it all works, and that everyone in the "food chain" [including stockholders] needs to make a profit. I just thought I might bring this up as to why the cost to manufacture something is not necessarily the same as the dealer's invoice. Additionally, in the case of the Navigator, as long as they can sell them all at a high price, they will charge a high price for 'em....
I have more of a beef with the used KBB values than new.
Check the "retail value" of your truck now.
It may be more than you paid for it when it was new.
BTW according to KBB my truck is worth $23,405 (used)
I paid $20,308 (new) for it including tax and tag.
MSRP new was $22,615.
I calculated as if I made no mods to stereo.
According to KBB this truck is worth $800 more than the MSRP when it was new.
Explain that one.

I shopped around the different dealers in my area for about 2 weeks, before I found my truck. I to like to drive it be for I sign. My truck was made 12/98 and it had just rolled off the truck the morning that I bought it with only 4 miles on it. For my next vehicle, I'm thinking about ordering it. Just my .02.

off the lot "a" plan
it was as easy as picking out the color
ends up it was a ordered truck but the person decieded to order a flairside
this truck has a manual shift 4x4
most of the lot trucks have elec. shift
other wise they were all about the same
when i was looking 30,000 for the 4x4
25,000 for the 4x2

I just ordered mine from Capitol Ford in Raleigh/ Auto-By-Tel.
4X4 Auto, 5.4L, Off-Road, Capt. Chairs, Lim-Slip, tow group, keyless entry
Wedgewood blue
26815 before TTT. ($100 over "invoice")
It really beats the hell out of haggling and shopping. They'll deliver it to me here in Morehead City! I shopped around for a 1999 last year and only got that close to invoice after hours of grief and listening to a sales guy tell me why his kids can't eat.

I had to order mine as at the time (oct 98) there was not one RC Flareside w/5spd and 4.6 in the region. It took about 3 1/2 months actual time-felt like 6 months on the anxious meter.....

Here's some stuff I found out when buying my 99 in late July. First, Kelley Blue Book, NADA and Edmunds are only references. The dealer still doesn't HAVE to give you what the book says. The dealer I went to went by the LOWEST number in NADA. I managed to talk him up some, but not much because I got my truck for $700 below invoice.
Kelley and NADA online were WAY apart in the values given for my 97. Both were off the mark compared to what my dealer went with. I wrote NADA and asked why there was such a big difference. They actually responded and told me that a huge key is to ask to see the little book that the dealer uses. Make sure you see which issue of the book he's using. Hmm. I didn't do that. Did you know that sometimes your blue book value goes up depending on availability and recent surveys?
Now about ordering. The dealer in Texas told me flat out that they should not ask for a deposit to hold or order a truck for you. The reason is that is misleading to the customer. Why? Because if you change your mind they are required by law (in Texas, I don't know about other states) to refund your deposit, in full. He told me that they got in some trouble recently for including "deposit info" on a sales order for a truck.
The day I bought my truck was the last work day in July. The dealer told me he only increased what I wanted on trade because he thought I would walk if he didn't. The dealership litterally closed while I was sitting in the showroom. The guy told me that he really wanted to close "one more deal" to make his July numbers better. Hmmm, again. Maybe going into the place about 2-3 hours before they close on the last workday of the month is a good buyer strategy.
Just a few tips from my experiences. Take em' or leave em' ...

I ordered because, like JA_Stang86 I never saw what I wanted on any of the lots I went to and if I had waited for one to show I'd be sitting forever cause now they don't make Reg cab Lariats nor my color.
When I found this out I went to my dealer to give him a hard time about it. He just laughed at me and said,
"Raoul, they haven't made those clothes you're wearing for the last 15 years either."
Things sure do change when they get your money.

Raoul, you had to give your dealer money down before they would special order your truck? I'm sorry, but every dealer does it differently. I guess my dealer figured that if I backed out and did not buy my truck, that they would have no trouble selling it on their lot. Maybe your dealer felt a reg cab Lariat could be a harder sale.

No, I had already taken delivery of the truck when I heard about the changes in the 2000 model.
He had tried to sell me something off the lot but I was adamant about what I wanted and I insisted he order it. I just went back to give him an opportunity to 'Kick Raoul Here!' It made his day and I like to do that for people. I'm actually very happy with my 'discontinued' truck.

Well Raoul, I to would have a reg cab Lariat, except I needed that extra space. Not for people, but for storage that is not effected by weather. My last car was a Taurus wagon and I got very used to being able to carry whatever I want in the dry, so I needed that extra cab space. But part of me wishes I had a reg cab, if for no other reason than easier parking and a little more "sporty" appearance.

I bought mine off the lot. I actually wanted a 4x4 Sport and not the ORP package, but when I saw the truck and the color, I loved it (and still do) so no regrets. I generally get my cars fully loaded, and this one has everything but the sliding rear window, but I am planning on putting in a PowerSlide, so no biggie. At the time, I was trading in a 94 Corvette for the truck and the lady who sold it to me gave me a look like "are you serious??". Well, she drives a demo and obviously didn't have to pay $1200 for a set of tires every 20-30K miles either! It was also the fastest I ever purchased a vehicle. I walked in and said "This is what I want, this is my trade, these are what I want my payments to be. Make it happen and I'll take it home now." I was in and out in 30 minutes!

I order mine because I'm just a picky #&?%$# person, I guess. Also, I never see what I want on the lot. Example: My new one just ordered. How many SC XLT V6 5-speeds do you expect dealers to order in for the masses?
In the past, I built exactly the vehicle I wanted on paper, did my homework on prices (dealer cost, hold-backs, incentives, interest rates, etc.), then I went to three dealers early on the same day and told the salespeople that I would buy this exact vehicle TODAY, based solely on price.
I remember saying for my '89 Taurus wagon: "Here's what I want. Save the spiel about your service department. No, I don't want a test drive. Just take your $350 commission and give me 5 minutes of your time to place the order on the computer. That's a pretty good hourly wage, when you think about it. Have a nice day."
Haven't used an Internet service, though. I'll check it out next time.
------------------
1998 XL SC short-box 4.2 5-speed 3.55LS, Pacific Green, A/C, factory box liner, factory dark tinted rear glass (like the XLT), cassette, carpet, Canadian XLS package (split bench, chrome wheels, side mouldings, box light, tailgate lock), sill guards, Windstar (driver's) wiper blade (the one with the air scoop). Oh ya: snazzy Tweetie Bird floor mats.
New 2000 F-150 on order, same as the current one except black and XLT. Great trucks!
