Congrats for a great carrer choice. There isn't a day I don't kick myself in the butt for not staying in to retire. Now I hope you can survive an obama term.. I pray and hope you never have to wear a UN uniform, or take orders from a UN officer. Thanks for your service.

I don't think he's too worried about Obama.
When he first enlisted, Clinton was CIC and it was post-Monica.

When I enlisted, Nixon was was telling everyone he was not a crook.
Three months later, I open the newspaper and the guy is a crook.

no not really worried about obama. not like i will get to meet him or take any direct orders from the guy. besides even if he gets elected for 8 years he wont be signing my retirement certificate. just as long as pelosi, murtha or barney frank dont get elected for president in 2016 i will be happy!

i cant wait to retire on Sept 9 2018! let the countdown begin

Don't know cause I'm not an american or know much about the USAF but is there something significant about doing 20 years of service opposed to 10?

if you do 20 years active duty you get 50% of your base pay every month for the rest of your life immediately after you retire, plus medical, no waiting until your 65 or whatever. for every 2 years after that you get 2.5% more. anything less than 20 and you get nothing. so i will be 40 when i retire and will be getting a pension plus medical benefits each month. 20+ years at some other job and i will be hopefully have 2 retirement incomes coming in at 60+ years old.

you could do anywhere from 4-19 years active duty and then go into the reserves or national gaurd, but you wouldnt get any retirement until you were 62 (i think, not sure, but its somewhere around that age)

Harleydude, that's the deal. My Brother retired after 20 years, now works for a company and will get retirement from that company some day (hopefully). I am envious, but he was always smarter than I am. By the way, 20 years ago, he was stationed at Eglin. I would guess you are too since you live in Crestview. He lived in Ft. Walton Beach at the time. The best to you!

Congratulations!
The second 10 years should go by easier as you make rank and do more supervising and managing.
Nothing beats that retirement check every month...nothing beats free medical, medicine and nothing beats telling people you retired at 40.
Make sure you start planing and saving for your retirement no less than 5 years from the date.
I was 39 and almost 14 years later I still miss it sometimes. I did save and took a 5 year vacation before I seriously started working again.

You usually don't know you are living the best years until you look back.
Good luck!
