Going to Propose- How to go about????

I have decided to make my girlfriend a honest woman finally. My situation is this....

We are heading down to our family's Condo in St.Thomas USVI. I want to buy the ring down there as jewellery is much cheaper down and I can get more for my dollar and don't have the taxes I do here. I had thought about buying a band first for the proposal and then sayin lets go pick out your ring. (In no way does any of this need to be traditional because we are tired of doing what everyone else has done. We have been to 12 weddings in the last 2 years....all close friends.)

I may have an opurtunity to slide away while we are down there to go look at rings before my parents get down if I make up a story which wouldn't be hard as we have a care taker down there and I could say she needed my help on something for a few hrs. My parents are overlapping us for 4 days at the end of our trip which would make it a lot easier to sneak out with my dad but I don't want to wait til the end. As we are down from Dec 19th to Jan 01 the seemingly obvious date would be new years but we leave the next morning so what fun is that....plus it's just a time crunch.

Going back I'm just not sure what she would think or all women for that fact if I proposed then said lets go get a ring. Do I propose with nothing? A twist tie? I'm just tryin to get some ideas.

I have looked up here to get ideas and see what I am looking at as far as $$$, style etc.

I have to go for now but will be back with more info and see what some of you may have said. Women's thoughts would be great.....or talk to your wives.

Thanks

Dave

Sounds fishy, but I've already got mine planned. Since I love to fly, I'm going to have my friends lay out like logs or something to spell out "WILL YOU MARRY ME?" on a large field and fly over it. :d No one take my idea! My advice (which isnt much cause im 17) is go with your gut. When the moment feels right, you'll know it.

i thought girls were supposed to think about that kind of stuff not guys.... jk raptor

why not propose on christmas? just have it wrapped up like a present. i think that would be the best bet.

or do it on christmas, and give her a picture frame with a picture of the ring.

Most women wouldlike to pick their own. Just get something cheap until tou get there. She can then pass it off to her friends as you went there just to get it custom made.
Women eat that stuff up

First of all, if you are a respectable man then you would ask her father or father figure.

get a ring, or a temp of some sort to act like a ring so she can pick it out, but if your about to propose, i hope you know her well enough to know what ring she would like. But you don't want to say "Will you marry me" and not have a ring. You would be like Seth Rogan in knocked up.

I asked my sister and she said

1. Tie in the "will you marry me" with a good funny inside joke you have with her

2. Take her to a place where you and her have really good memories, somewhere romantic.

3. Make it a complete surprise. Like in a restaurant stand up and ask her in front of everyone there. I asked my girlfriend at the time to go to prom with me at the championship lacrosse game over the loud speaker. It made her blush and she got super embarassed and it worked out great!

If you cant figure anything out you can always call her best friend, mom, or sister/s

Just a couple ideas. If any other good ones come up ill let you know. Hope this helps a bit. But good luck man!!! Let us know how it goes.

D

I proposed once when I was really drunk... Her response was you just want to get me into bed. When I sobered up ( I always rembered everything I did when I was drunk... can be really :o....)

She still did not take it seriously, so I had a reprieve.

good luck.

The location and whether she is the right person is not my issue. It was more what to do about wanting to buy the ring down there.

I do have an idea of what I could do now.

buy the ring down there if you will be able to get a nicer one, just don't tell her you bought it there to save money or you might get in trouble! good luck on what ever you decide

^ Same difference, bigger rock, cheaper ring.

Either way, here's what I did which might help you out.

I had a fairly good idea of what she might want for a ring...but I was still a little unsure since I would be throwing down so much $$$$...thats not something I want to be unsure of. So, I found exactly what I was looking for with a simulated diamond.

NO, i didnt do this cause Im cheap, i did this to leave the door open for options. The simulated diamond (not a CZ, not really sure what it is, but it was beautiful) was purchased in order to keep the proposal special but still allow her a change if she wanted.

So, we were at Niagara Falls at night with fireworks, I popped the question, we were giddy like little schools girls, blah blah blah. She loved the ring. But, after a bit I told her that the diamond was a Simulated Diamond, which she said she NEVER would have known, anyway

Then I gave her some options...

1. If she really like the ring, we'll go get the real diamond for it right when we get home.
2. She can pick out something completely different
3. She can wear the ring as is with the simulated diamond and when we find a house to buy (insert any other major purchase here) Ill put all the money I was going to spend on the diamond in towards the down payment. And later on down the road we can put the diamond in if she wants.

Well, my now WIFE, is still wearing her Simulated Diamond 1 1/2 yrs. later and we close on our first new home on Tuesday...to which I put the down payment on. She has got a lot of compliments on here "diamond" ring and really has no desire to at this point to spend a bunch of money on a "rock".

Now, my wife is probably a little more practical than most women, due to the decision she made and that shes happy with the fake diamond.

Hope that might give you a few options to consider.

Congrats man. And good luck!!!

When I was getting ready to propose my wife (girlfriend at the time) always wanted a princess cut solitaire. One day she saw this ring at zales and fell in love with it. It worked out for me, she showed me the ring a couple days later and it was on sale at that time. It was a lot less for the complete set than the solitaire I had picked out. I ended up buying it that day with her there but she didn't get it until a couple weeks later.
the ring I bought her

What I think I am going to do is get a silver ring engraved with "Will you marry me?" on the outside or inside. Go for a walk on one of the beaches and when she's not looking toss it out in front so it can look like I found it. I'll hand it to her while on one knee so she can look/read it.

Sounds Cheezy I guess but I think it will throw her a bit. Then we can go to a jewellery store and go pick out one she likes.

Oh and krusedisc- congrats on the house that's awesome.

Those simulated diamonds are bad a**. I read an article in Smithsonian magazine describing the process used to create them. Check it out.
