Ive been wanting to get myself a Xbox 360 for a while now. I was considering buying the Arcade one for 199.00 but it doesn't come with a hard drive, etc... Then I figured I'd check ebay and stumbled upon these obviously refurbished ones. Seems too good to be true so that probably means it is.

Oh, I would give it a go. With all of that feedback, mostly positive, I would say it's a pretty safe bet. New XBOXs are 199 here now, unless you want the high-end elite version, so that's not really too good to be true for a refurbished. Go for it!
i went and bought a refurb from ebay not too long ago. it quit within two months and now ive got a 250 dollar brick sitting next the tv. been there for 5 months or so now.
after opening mine up (no warranty anyway) i realized someone had gone in and done some of the temporary mods id been reading up on. turns out they truly were temporary...

I'd say when it comes to an x-box, buy new.
The older 360's had problems with a solder joint breaking during gameplay, causing the "red ring of death". If you look on youtube, there is a temporary fix called the "towel trick". Consists of wrapping a towel around the x-box and purposefully overheating the unit (thus re-soldering the joint).
The newer the x-box, the newer the rev (revision).

How necessary is a hard drive? How big of one should I get? Im just afraid I've waited too long in the game to get one now, I would hate to spend the money and have a new one come out within 6 mos.

I just got Halo 3, so to download maps, save videos and screenshots from moments on Live, a HDD is a MUST

I just bought the Arcade version ($199) and I stumbled upon a promotional event Xbox is doing. For $29.99, they will send you a refurbished (reformatted) 20GB HDD plus 3 months of Xbox Live Gold. I already put in my order.
BTW, it comes with a limited warranty too!
