My take was that it was indeed two guys trying very hard not to make a major mistake...
From what I saw---and talking to a good friend of mine who is a conservative---he agrees with on this--- it is McCain who has to outright win the debate...Obama just has to not lose the debate. Does that make sense?
I do think that Obama is a smoother public speaker---not that that means anything. McCain seems to have to work harder in this area.
I was not impressed by either though---both seemed to have a lack of substance.

Obama does have a name. McCain could have just as easily used his name. Well, part of his name. It's not OK to use Obama's full name. So, McCain could have just as easily used part of Obama's name.

so mccain is old and grumpy for calling him "that one" but obama isnt young and disrespectful by calling him "john" in the first debate? mccain calls him senator obama, why cant obama give him the same respect? but i am sure thats apples and oranges right? or did i miss the part were mccain gave him permission to call him john and obama didnt return the favor?

Some spinners tried to make a case of that the night of the first debate.
How is it disrespectful to call a man by his name?
In the military, officers call each other by their first names. We enlisted addressed each other (of the same or lower rank) by last name alone, but those above us were always Sergeant Whatever their last name was, Sir for male officers, and ma'am for females.
John and Barak are both Senators. They should have the flexibility to call each other by name... especially when it is their name.
