Depending on what you are wanting to do, I recomend one of the flux core
wire welders. You can buy them at home depot and those sorts of places.

But what I recomend is to go to a local welding supply shop an get a phamplet
one the brands they sell. You will spend a couple of dollars more, but
the support and replacement parts are always just down the street.
The shop here in my small town always welcomes the business.

i've had pretty good luck with my little lincoln welder that started off as a flux core package. i've changed it and added gas to it, i now weld SS and mild steel with it without flux core.

you bring up a good point for the op, mig and flux core welders are the same except the polarity is switched and fluxcore doesnt use gas. but if you planning on doing this just make sure you get one that is gas ready, it will save some headaches of adding gas when you switch to mig

Small jobs I'd go with the Lincoln 3200 HD! Has both flux core option and gas!

Not sure how much $ that model is.... was a B-day present!

Good luck

I have a Millermatic 210 and its a great unit but it is 220. Miller and Lincoln are both great machines and you cant go wrong with either, but the Miller comes in a color that is real close to FORD blue!

How much of the stud is there sticking out.
There are tools designed just for that purpose.
The problem I always run into is the location of the stud.
I recomend trying a stud removal tool over trying to weld.
Start soaking the stud with marvel mystery oil or similar
penetrating oil for a few days then remove it. That is
if there is enough of it left.

i got 2 rear studs busted off flush with the manifold so..after i remove it ill have what... 1/2 inch to play with. im just worried about breaking off the rest if them in the head. i was thinking if i just cut off the rest with cut off wheel flush with the manifold ill be able to slide it right off. ive heard about those stud removal tools. ive never used one before.
