fixing steering on an outboard
labnerd.....we heated it up and it got loose but when it cooled it got stiff again. We ar thinkign we have to take off the motor from the mount and manually clean out the tube the motor pivots on. Is it hard to remove an outboard from the mount?
look up year year

the inner tube is rusted, you will have to invent a hone to clean it out, often you have to remove the outboard to get the steering out of the tube.

also, the cable steering is most likely shot from being forced to turn

I'm not sure how I missed this yesterday but I did. I assume you got the PM. The mineral spirits will work but it has to have time. Like beckerjs said if it's it's rusted, it's got to come apart but if it's just stiff and not gritty, the mineral spirits will work. I've used a loadable grease gun to inject it before and it may take several times before you get enough in there to finally turn the goop loose. If you don't have mineral spirits, a good 5w-20 oil will also work as a solvent on the old grease.
I'll try that labnerd. I am not sure if we can load the grease gun we got with mineral spirits. The grease gun I have used takes cartridges. Not sure if you can just dump liquid in there.
