now I'm confused, I just went through the list and Iams is on it as a recommended food brand

Iams is not a bad food, just not one of the best and it's their research that is not good.

just because some people swear by Iams doesn't mean it's good
what makes a food good is what's in the ingredients, that is what you should be looking at..not that brand name

many people out there swear by Ol roy and kibbles n bits and purina too but doesn't mean they are good!

general rule of thumb is if you see it advertised on TV then it's not any good.
good pet food companys do not waste money by advertising on tv and other places, they put the money into the ingredients.

oh and btw to anyone out there, the majority of veteranarians don't know squat about pet foods unless they are one of the rare ones that educated themselfs about it cause in vet school they only get about 4 hours of training on nutrtion and it's sponsored by Hills who makes science diet....gee i wonder why just about every vet in america sells science diet

 

Another thing to remember is that each one of these lists or measurements is someone's opinion. I read them, try to learn a little and go with what sounds best to me. Also, keep in mind, what is best for a working dog or a hunting dog will be different from what is best for a lap dog.

 

I agree completely. Just do a little studying if you care about your dog and try to get one that is not going to be detrimental or just filler, like most of the grocery shelf brands or Ol' Roy.

You guys can all go out and buy your expensive dog food. My last dog was a full breed Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Bought directly from a breeder. She lived until she was 12 years old (average age) and was healthy all her life till her last month or so. She was happy, healthy and active. She was fed grocery store dog food (shame on me!). I now have another Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and she also eats grocery store dog food. And please, don't tell me I'm not a good dog owner and don't care about my pets.

 

my schnauzer is 6. He's gone through different foods such as grocery store, im pretty sure Iams, im not even sure which brand is in the container now. He's never had any problems.

But all of a sudden he isnt seeming to want the regular dog food since we started feeding him that special canned stuff once a week .

They tend to get spoiled to the "good" stuff.

 

My dog eats the wal-mart brand (Ol'Roy I think) and she is doing great!

 

Just think what she could be on a good food! Just kidding. There are charts showing that the supposedly high priced specialty brands actually cost less than the grocery store brand. The recommended serving is nearly half on some of them, so that the bag may cost more, but the daily ration cost less.

I have bought a lot of Purina and Pedigree in my lifetime, so I understand. The dog will look fine and do ok. I am convinced they will stay trimmer, more active and healthier with a better quality, just as we will. We eat the wrong stuff, we baloon. We still live but maybe not as long and as healthily as had we eaten better. This is just my take on it and it's not for everyone, that's for sure.
