Considering the twin turbo 3.5 V6 they have in the works, I'd be disappointed to see the I4. The I4 is going to have fun trying to motivate a 3,500-3,800# car. That's just me though.

i thought the mustang was produced back in the 60's as a cheap muscle car. not an expensive rice burner... i really hope they dont get rid of the v8 in the mustang.

I guess I'm showing my age, but the Mustang was not a muscle car. It was a pony car.

In a 1/4 mile, I'll bet that 310 hp 4 cylinder will stomp all but the most elite of the 1960's V8 Mustangs. And have way better driveabilty and handling. Even with the weight disadvantage, that 4 banger will positively destroy a stock 289 Hi-Po (mid to high 15's), and probably run with or beat a stock Boss 302 (mid to high 14's). And BTW, the hi-po and Boss 302 options were not cheap. The reality is a 2 barrel V8 289 or 302 Mustangs with automatic and 2.79 or 3.0 gears could not keep up with today's economy cars.

Technology is good. Embrace it. V8 power from a 4 cylinder, and following the SVO heritage of hi-po fours. Sounds good to me.

Woohoo! Can't wait to hear one with a coffee can on the exhaust running around town sounding like a ricer! I don't want Ford to drop the V8 engine but a 4 banger making 300 horsepower isn't to much to complain about!

Ford won't drop the V8, be assured of that.

I just hope they do bring this to market and make it special, like the privious SVO's. They stood apart from all the other Mustangs.

Oh really?? how about the big block mustangs? the 428CJ was anything but pony. That was all muscle. And the 429 in the '71 mustang was a beast.

Mustang's were orginally marketed towards women man, thats why they had small 4 bangers to begin with. Then guys started picking up on them an thats when they started putting in the 5.0L H/O and were marketed more to men then orginally to women.

Mustangs are still primarily marketed towards and bought by- women...

I mean, think about it. Next time you're out driving (if you lie in a major city) count the first 10 Mustangs you see will be driven by women. V8 or V6, there are still more women behind the wheel than men. I think men and women are prety close to equal on the V8, but from what I see- which is a pretty good sampling in the DFW area, the scales are more towards women.

As for todays's ecomony cars spanking yesterday's Mustang's- that's true.
In fact, you don't have to go back to the 60's and 70's, today's 2002 - 2008 Altima SE will spank any GT or below Mustang from 1998 on back in 0 - 60 and 1/4 mile. That's not even talking about the truly fast 4-bangers like the WRX STI, and Mitsu EVO's (and to a lesser extent, the Cobalt SS, and Dodge Neon SRT-4).

While today's cars lack the sex appeal of yesterday's muscle (1965 Pontiac GTO) & Pony cars (Shelby Mustang's), in terms of performance and safety, it is no contest.

Mustangs built for women? The Mustang was never built for a man or a woman, but it was definitely not built for women. The car was built to be relatively cheap, fast, and have great looks.

Hersh, I have to completely disagree. It might be that way in Texas but you can't just speak for the rest of the country. Here in Florida, I could count the first 10 Mustangs, more than likely 8/10 or even 9/10 would be men driving them, not women. I see way more women driving Ford Edges, Explorers, Expeditions, and F150s than Mustangs around here.
