Need to vent - anyone else feel this way

My rant. Does anyone know what the date was when people stopped caring about each other? I heard on the radio they were talking about EDD – Empathy Deficiency Disorder. I found it funny they came up with a name for it and probably a pill to follow in the future, but I also found it quit sad. It’s basically the lack of empathy and compassion from people. We just don’t give two **** about anyone. Here in CT there was some big news about a guy who got hit by a car. The news wasn’t about the accident it was that they caught it on a security camera and for 15 minutes cars drove around the guy laying in the middle of the road, pedestrians just looked and walked by, no one stopped! I believe the guy died. That just makes me sick to my stomach that the hundreds of cars/people that saw or walked passed couldn’t even make a 1 minute phone call to the police to help this guy. Then the other day I read a story about a homeless guy getting beaten to death by some kids. Again it was on a security camera – people, who walked by stopped, looked over then kept walking. Finally some guys who were working in a near by garage came out to help the guy, but it was too late. Broken ribs, ruptured spleen and a host of other injuries. Everyday I come across a situations where people make a decision to NOT help someone or just be a little courteous – go ahead let the door slam in my face, I understand it’s just way to much work and effort and a strain on your time to hold the door for 4 more seconds for me. And the really sad thing, I believe I’m one of the good guys, I go out of my way to help others when I can, I’ve changed flat tires, jumped dead batterys, pushed stuck cars, carried a wheel chair across an unplowed road, held doors, let moms and elder folks go ahead of me in line, for total strangers just because I think it’s the right thing to do…. But I’m getting tired of all the other people, maybe I should just be a selfish, rude, mean, blind to all, jerk as well.

shut up and go cry some place else nobody here cares looser.

Seriously though, yea the world is going to crap in a hand basket faster than a fat man can destroy a big mac, side of fries, diet coke, and a McFlurry with granola sprinkles on top.

Na. Don't bring yourself down to their level. I feel your pain. Compassion is a commodity no one invests in anymore. It's everywhere and yes, it is sad. I heard just yesterday that you hardly ever hear people say "thank you", "you're welcome" or "I appreciate your help". Very different times now. - Og

Keep the faith.
I derive personal satisfaction from the way I conduct myself. This goes for setting an example for others as well as those acts of which only you are aware.

You have no problem looking in a mirror, make sure you keep it that way.

It's a result of the Democratic Congress!

Seriously, it is sad that people are more and more afraid to get involved. I wish a lot of things were like it was when I was growing up. Hmmm, that was before TV, rock and roll, gangs, rap music, businesses open on Sunday, pro sports, well, you get the picture. It was a kinder world back then, or at least it seemed so.

I didn't mean to imply in my last post that I was perfect.

I rear ended a car this morning... I knew it was going to be a really bad day.
The driver got out of the other car and he was a dwarf. He looked up at me and said, "I am not happy!
I said, "Well, which one ARE you then?"
That's when the fight started!!!

Ya dont slump to that level. You are not the only one that feels this way, I try to conduct myself in a similar manner. Just like the other day I watched a homeless guy go from parking lot to parking lot looking for loose change. People would just scowl at him and act like they were so much better then this guy. Well finally I couldnt take it any more I got out of my truck when some stupid punk kids started giving the guy a hard time. I took him into the resturant with me and bought him a nice meal and just gave him someone to talk to. I learned alot from that talk with Bill. Like not all homeless guys out there are drunks who dont care, like the media portiats them to be. He had lost everything in a house fire about 3 months prior to that and then his wife left him for another man. And then a streak of unfortunate luck had landed him on the streets. He is trying to get employment and get back on his feet. So after our discussion I told him to take care and sent him on his way with $50. Ya that may have been a half tank of gas I was planning on putting in, but I think he needed it more then I did. And even if all that was a lie he told me, I still feel good that I did the right thing. And if just one more person starts to help out others because they saw me do that for him it was worth every penny. And to this day I can't help but wonder how that man is doing......

Ok rant over, but I agree I dont like where the world is headed.

05 - That was a pretty cool think to do, good for you. You made that guys day.

I do believe in the saying What comes around goes around, so I hope someday if I'm in a jam, someone will be there to help me. Also, when some cranky, jerk, pissy, pos of a person angers me, I can smile knowing there life must really suck....

Thanks.
And you said it, what goes around comes around! And that is my thoughts exactly. If I was in the same position, I would want some help too. At least at the end of the day I know there are other people just like me out there trying to do the right thing and live by some set of morals. Either way great thread start because I have needed to vent about this too!

I cant imagine how this must have lifted his spirits and given him hope. If it was all a lie, if he was a drunk it doesnt change what you did for another person and thats what matters.

Ya, that is how I felt. I can say that made my day to knowing that I helped make that big of an impact on someone's life. And it is not like it was some great taxing effort to do. But in Bill's difference I really don't think that he was drunk there was no alcohol smell on his breath and for that matter he was fairly clean considering his standard of living.

Empathy is highly overrated.
