Compound Bows

I am looking at buying one here in the next few weeks and I have never owned one. I do enjoy shooting a bow, but have never bow hunted. I am an avid rifle hunter when it is deer season.

I have went out and measured my draw length. I am sitting at I believe 32.5". Yeha I am a big dude. 6'7" and 240 #'s. I don't want to go out and buy a Hoyt or some insane amount of money on a bow. Under $900 if possible.

I did manage to find a bow I liked. Bowtech 101st Airborne when can go to 31.5" and shooting release would be just right. But I have heard stories that this bow is quite noisy.

I am venturing into a new world here, so please enlighten me.

I've shot the Bowtech and its anything but noisy. I would recommend this bow, or a Mathews. I currently shoot a Browning bow, and both the Mathews Switchback and the Bowtech make mine sound like its a rifle going off. I've been looking at both the Mathews and the Bowtech, shot them both, but personally I'm saving for the Mathews.

Wow I didn't know the switchbacks had draw lengths that long. I am now reconsidering my choices.

I shoot the xforce and its an amazing bow. It is very user friendly and they have a long draw version. I would check into them as well they are about the same price as the mathews.

Dude, do yourself a favor and buy a Mathews....hands down. You will not regret it one bit. That has to be the quietest bow I have never heard. And smooth.

You should check ebay....seen some killer deals on there for whole setups with good sites, stabilizers/dampners, arrows, case and all.

Good Luck....Huntin season will be here before you know it.

You should try shooting tournaments...that's alot of fun. And you don't have to be a pro to do it. Though if you can't shoot well....you lose alot of arrows....LOL

I have a coworker that shoots in tourneys on Sundays. He has invited me if I ever bought a bow.

My dad won a lot of archery tournaments, so hopefully I inherited his mad shooting skillz.

Honestly if I were you and never owned a bow before I would buy decent bow complete set up through Bass Pro or Cabelas for around $300. Most of these will shoot plenty good enough for a beginner. I started to bow hunt about 8 years ago on cheap PSE from Cabelas and about 3 years ago I bought a Hoyt. The Hoyt is much nicer bow but my accuracy has stayed about the same. A good archer can make a cheap bow shoot good and a bad archer can make a expensive bow shoot like crap.

Also by the way you can get a nice Hoyt for under $900, well at least when I bought mine. And X2 on the mathews they are nice. If you have any bow shops around you could check into used bows, they generally don't hold their value very well since every year there is some "new" gimmick or technology.

Go to an archery shop and shoot as many bows as you can, then decide on which one you want. The shorter the bow the less forgiving it is going to be which means the better archer you will need to be.

X2

You'll want a as forgiving bow as possible for hunting. There are times when you are in the tree stand and can't get into the proper position for the shot. That is one thing that I'm not used to with my Hoyt, it is not nearly as forgiving as my previous bow, as a result I have a harder time getting the shot just right while hunting. Get your hands on some bows and see what you like the best, it's like buying a pistol, it's very personal and you need to be comfortable with the bow you choose.

It will be a wee bit hard to demo some stuff when the avg draw length is like 28 inches and I need about 4 inches more.

i know its not as popular as mathews, hoyt and others but i really like my High Country. Its not as expensive as a mathews and when i would target practice, mine would consistently stick further into the target than the mathews. ive had mine for 4 1/2 years now and not one bit of trouble. im now looking at getting a new one just because....

I have a local archery place that is about 1 mile down the road. I have went in there 2 times and they have been asses every time. From what I have been told, the guy who owns it lets his asshat friends work there.

Many variables to account for besides the bow, like arrow weight, what your draw weight was set to, silencers on the mathews, etc. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but very few hunting bows shoot quicker than a mathews, and the mathews is the most quiet out of any I've seen/heard.
