What's up with this whole 'texting' thing?

I know I'm an old fart and I don't do the texting thing and I don't have any kids, so I don't know all the acronyms and such, but has anybody else noticed that a lot of posts are going to the whole 'texting' format?

It's the no caps, no grammar, no punctuation, all the u r this and u r that...

I usually stop reading a post like that, because I don't understand or can't follow most of it. I end up figuring that you won't understand anything I have to say anyway! I know it's meant to be a 'code', so us old farts can't tell what you are saying, but man, this is getting really old.

How do you 'texting' people out there communicate in the real world? I really hope you actually do know how to spell and punctuate a simple sentence...

I only got C's in high school English class, so I make the usual mistakes to this day, but at least I think most everyone can follow what I'm trying to say!

I really hope that the next several generations of kids learn more then this 'texting' way to communicate!

I hear ya. I used to hate it. Now I text all the time on my phone mostly because the girls I date love texting (21-28 year olds). I used 1500 texts last month on my cell phone! Now when I am typing on a forum I try not to use the texting words. The reasoning behind the texting short cuts is because people want to not type as much. Its easier to type "u" than it is "you"

When i text I spell out the whole word and rarely abbreviate. It's takes me a bit longer I guess, but I hate abbreviattions.

Yeah, when I'm talking to my friends and I have to type something quickly, I'll use texting format. But on forums, I like my sentences to be properly punctuated.

Oh, I understand the deal of texting on the phone... I don't have any problem with that, because I don't text and I don't receive texts on my phone!

It's when it's spilling over onto forums and where other people are trying to communicate. Yes, I know it saves time while typing something out on a phone while you are driving... ha, ha... (I know that's not where most people text, but I know people do it too!)

I know I'm going to lose this texting fight and I'm not really looking to win it.... I'm just saying that I've noticed it more and more on this site, where on another 'old fart' site I go to, it's basically non existent... I know it's the audience that will dictate the manner in which what is acceptable or not, but I still see it being more and more accepted and how long will it be until we start seeing job resumes with this kind of writing on them??

Mitch, I've seen quite a few with some pretty funny errors on them that end up in the trash can before the boss even looks at them.

I agree! I hate the posts with no caps and no puntuation as well as the texting lingo. But, as another "old fart", phone texting can be fun!

Not when it costs me $.15 a text message!! I know I could pay some $15 bucks a month for unlimited texting, but I don't see where I would text someone 100 times a month! I know that's just about an hours worth of texting for most people, but I just don't do it...

I'm even a IT guy! I run the network for a CPA firm and do computer consulting for the firm as well! If someone wants to reach me, they can call my cell and I'll TALK to you.... Or I'll login to my secured email server and email you.... I refuse to 'text' you on a phone...

I finally had to completely exclude texting from my cell phone, because I was getting text SPAM on it and having to pay for it, even if I didn't open it!

Anyway, pmason718, I didn't understand over 99% of that text giberish, so I will just die a non texting death sometime in the near future!! ha, ha!!

Raptor, I also toss any resume that has basic grammer errors that even a C English student like me would know about!!

Thanks for this thread Mitch.
I never made the connection between texting and posting.
I just thought some peoples were egnorant.

As for texting, I don't get it.
You punch keys on a tiny keyboard to say what you coulda said if you dialed the number? And you coulda dialed because you have a phone in your hand?

It couldn't be more crazy if I made it up.

I only type three responses to the texts I get...
(yes, no and hell no)

Raoul. Sometimes its easier to say something short like "I am on my way" instead of calling them and tellign them. It cuts out all the hello/goodbye BS and gets right to the point.

Another reason could be when your in a meeting and you text people under the table secretly. I do that all the time.

And the young bucks that are in school can text eatchother during class and not get caught.
