The Arkansas grown tomatoes on the shelves now are among the finest in the world.
But the ones we grow for ourselves have a softer skin{not good for shipping} are about 3lb per $1.00 now. Man they are good this year.

I work at Wendy's in N. Fla and we just started serving our tomatoes again today. I personally prefer them off, I like my burger nice a hot, not wet and cold, but I love them with everything else

Simply cleaning tomatoes is not a reliable way to get rid of the salmonella bacteria, says food safety expert Tom Chestnut of NSF International.

Washing fruits and vegetables is a good way to reduce bacteria on the outside, "but it's very difficult to get a total elimination," he says.
From that info it seems nothing is 100% effective at cleaning fruits and vegetables, but washing them off is better than nothing. It says nothing about the salmonella entering the fruit.

I was at Dillon's Friday evening doing my grocery shopping - the Arkansas tomatoes there are $2.29 a pound and don't look very ripe. You guys must be keeping the good ones for yourselves - don't blame ya.

They are shipped green so they ship better. Just leave it out of the refridgerator , it will ripen.

The best ones are kept here only because of damage in shipping.

forgot to mention, The best tasting tomatoes aren't as pretty as the ones you buy at the supermarket

They weren't green - they were just pale - pretty much pink instead of red.
