Lawn mower engine issue

I got this John Deere, that isn't that old, but has not been run in a couple years. I put gas in it but it won't start. I pull the plug and shoot in some starting fluid and put the plug back but no start. I then pull the plug and lay it by the head, to check for spark, and it sparks and also ignites the fluid in the cylinder which shoots a flame. I then put the plug back in but it still won't start. So there is spark and fuel but it doesn't start.

Is the fuel cap on the tank, and is it tight? What about the air filter, what's it look like? Stopped up? Clean?

Cap is on tight. Only took a quick look at the filter, maybe I should pull it off and try to start it.

there is your answer. take the carb apart, clean it, put it back together, it will run fine.

Well I guess as soon as I get some time it's carb cleaning.

The issue I have with my push mower has nothing to do with the engine. The engine runs like a top. The issue I have with my push mower is the fact that I have to push it once a week.
