Recycling Metals

Has anyone gotten into this ? I just took my old catalytic converters in and got $160 for all 4.

Work sucks so much around here that we are gathering all our Copper,Brass and Aluminum scrap together . I have allot of it around here. I live in a third generation home so I have allot of scrap that's added up - at least 200 years worth lol.

Since I started cleaning up around here , other friends and family members are donating there scrap . Well I have quite a bit now - Just picked an old Trampoline from one guy - Solid Aluminum $$$. Probably close to 140 lbs of Copper and 70 lbs of Brass. I'll guess at the aluminum - about 500 lbs ready to take in.

Question is, I just started doing this for beer money really, but ended up with more than enough for just that. The market is high 3.90 per lb for Copper, but the salvage yards are offering me $3.00 per lb. Is there somewhere else I could turn this in at and get more for it ?

Make sure you return to an "Auto Salvage" only -Some places don't deal with them , BUT will offer you a VERY low price for them - Don't do it, call around and you'll see.

ALSO - I need to look further into this, but I've read/learned that you can return old O2 sensors ...?? I haven't tried that , but I have 8 old ones laying around - I will post what happens or what I find out

I recycle our aluminum cans here at the house. A full 30-gallon trash can brings me about $15.00 from the scrap yard a mile or two up the road. I do it more for larks than anything else -- gives me a good excuse to hop on Amazon and purchase a CD from a band I'm interested in more than anything. FWIW -- my wife thinks it's completely asinine......

Entire neighborhoods in Vancouver are loosing phone service because thieves keep stealing the phone wires to sell for scrap. Where'd you say you got your copper?

This is unrelated to Vancouver but the same thing

Update to include pictures of the type of phone cable that was cut.

Update - Thursday 8pm: Michael W Wheeldon, 49 yrs, Longview, was the ninth person arrested in an ongoing investigation where tens of thousands of dollars of telephone cable was stolen from active toll cable telephone lines. Wheeldon was arrested at about 6:00 p.m. by Deputy Craig Shelton. Wheeldon was booked on charges of Theft 1st degree, Trafficking in stolen Property 1st degree, and Possession of stolen Property 1st degree. More arrests are expected....

elso, WASH – The 7th and 8th person has been arrested in a large scale theft ring involving telephone cable; more arrests are expected. The case began with a tip in January and Deputy Craig Shelton has been pursuing the suspects in the case ever since. There have been tens-of-thousands of dollars of phone cable stolen. The thefts have been large scale commercial sized cable that is between 3" - 6" in diameter. Qwest communications has reported hundreds and hundreds of feet of the cable stolen from locations throughout the Longview, Kelso and Rainier area. The thieves took the cable to metal recyclers in the Portland Oregon area and sold it as scrap. Some of the recyclers have cooperated with the investigation.

I just dug a hole until I found something shiny. Pulled up about 5 feet of it , then it snagged

Hooked my 8000 lb WARN Winch to it and the sh^t began to pile up, like spaghetti. It may be the largest ball of Copper you ever seen

Nah, no stealing around these parts, but I hear on the news, people losing there converters over night in Detroit - The red light district.

I visit a mechanics forum and recently a few shop owners have posted about having their yard broken into and thieves stealing 4 or 5 converters at a time.

Hahaha - I'm gonna have a load or maybe two like that before I'm thru - Hey do you think it would be worth taking all this freaking Coax in ? There's not much copper in it and I'm sure as hell not going to strip all that!! Mannn, I sure would like to off it. I don't know how many times I've had to move that stuff around - Hey , maybe I'll have the kids strip the insulation off .

This sh^t has added up over the years, I've got allot more to chop up down in the crawl space. I sure hop it's going to be worth it!! -

I'll finally be able to get rid of this stuff - I have a few engine blocks as well. Never crossed my mind until recently that this stuff was worth anything.

Really ? That's good!! Did yuh leave the insulation on ? I think I have one spool of that- 500 feet I think - I'll have to check , pretty sure it's CAT 5 - I forgot about that until you just mentioned it. I think I know where it's at.

I picked up 12 computers from a pharmaceutical company who just updated.

These are all Dell's and identical - only 1.5 processor , not worth much , but I figure computer scrap should be worth something if I get enough of it - I didn't grab the monitors, just the computers. Actually I did grab ONE monitor , that's right. Anyway , where the hell do you scrap old comps?

I'm looking on line - So far , I found some dude in China willing. Really looking for some place local. - Damn , I probably should of left the damn things there
