lawn tractor issue

I have a SLT 1554 cub cadet with a 27hp engine. when running it will not idle properly, it just revs up and down. When blades are engaged it has no problem runs fine with a load on. As soon as i disengage the blades it begins to rev up and down and seems to be missing at times. Any ideas?????

Spark plug fouled, faulty, or gap too wide.

Dirty air cleaner.

Choke activated.

I've had this happen on my GT1554. We've got the same engines...

It was a dirty fuel filter that was causing my issue.

Here's mine...

I won't embarrass you by asking how much you paid for it because
it looks to me like you're peeling out of an empty Home Depot parking lot, in too much of a hurry to shove it in all the way.
With your head down so low we can't even id you.

Spark plug fouled, faulty, or gap too wide?

Dirty air cleaner?

Choke activated?

its starving for gas, check tank vent, adjust idle mixture, check air filter as mentioned, possible fuel pump but doubtful. It runs better with the blades engauged because the govenor is regulating the speed of the engine.

The old style sidedraft are what all the lawnmowers I've seen have. It is usually dirty mixture jets. Sometimes it is pulses from a worn out fuel pump{not very often} I didn't notice in the above post but check the pulse line to the fuel pump for leaks.
Turning the mixture screws don't help most of the time. Look it up onlime I've found a few lawnmower forums. I even found one site the had links to complete breakdown of engines.
Clean the carb and count the number of turns on the mixture screws, and put them back to the original settings. What ever you do Don't change the float level. It is usually a very small spring that holds everything in place.
Also the float could be leaking. {does it ever sound lean on the top end or does it ever kick back and die}

When minedoes this i sometimes take the screws out , then give it low presure bursts of air.
