Let's start over......
When my little boy saw the "For Sale" sign on Rocky he was not enthused at all -- and even showing him a picture of a Thunderbird didn't sway his opinion! I think he's got a little of "me" inside of him in the fact that getting rid of one of your vehicles is a bit like getting rid of a member of the family.....
My wife was also not real happy -- not because she loves the Ranger, but because she absolutely HATES the little Cavalier I would be driving in place of it! She thinks it's embarrassing to be seen driving around town in that car at my age and says that it makes it look as if we live in a trailer park!
I also think she think's it's stupid to get another "toy" car, even though she won't come out and say it. There are no "car guys" on her side of the family (the men on her side of the family do two things -- drink and golf) and she simply cannot wrap her mind around the idea that a vehicle is anything more than transportation or possibly a social cue regarding how much money you make.....

Not sure I would trade the Ranger for the TBird either. Just never cared for that particular vehicle. However, I have to agree with your wife on the Cavalier. On the other hand, I can see where it's a perfect fit for you.

Plus, the "Retrobirds" are at the age where you need to jump in if you're going to jump in. Right now, they are just good used cars (often with extremely low mileage since so many were bought for the sole purpose of being weekend cruisers) that can be had at what is likely to be the bottom of their price range. In another few years, I see the really good examples of this car escalating in value as the model ages, becomes rarer, and the clean, low-mileage examples begin to fade away.
We'll see what shakes out......
Maybe the reason you never cared for the "Retrobird" has to do with the fact that you grew up during the era when the real "Baby Birds" were actually being produced? I grew up when the T-Bird had devolved into a bloated, 70's-era land yacht, so the return to the true origins of that model (two-seater convertible) was really appealing to me!

I think T-birds are gross LOL
Glad I'm working on welding. My truck and a stang... Other toys I'll make. I'd love to take a newer Taurus and fabricate it onto a rear wheel drive frame with a 5.0 and a manual. Its going to be crazy if I get good because I have crazy ideas LOL.
