What air system does it use? Have you pulled the plugs to see if it is rich or lean..
The carb is for a Kohler K301 12hp in a 1978 John Deere 312 with unknown hours on the engine and everything looks to be original.

I went through the carb this summer while I was rebuilding the rest of the tractor and replaced the throttle shaft and plate, gaskets, float seat cup and needle valve. It's leaking around the needle valve and just flooding the intake from what I can see. I also rebuilt the govenor linkage because the old one was plain worn out and I just ordered the rest of the parts to replace the rest of the govenor linkage. It's running extremely rich and when I try and lean it out I can't seem to find a happy medium even with John Deere's setting from the service manual.

Here is the old one.

I'm going to see if I can find a diagram of it. Sounds like what everyone else has said though, float adjustment or needle valve not seating properly. If you dont have an adjustable air gauge I normally just blow through the fuel line when checking whether it has seated. The seams on the float should be level with the bowl when seated. Is the air filter soaked in fuel? Had a chance to check the timing or valve clearance? If the timing is off or the valves are not seating, it can blow fuel back through the carb. And would run like crap

I have done everything short of taking it to a carb shop, the fuel shut off has no unusual wear and I have even adjusted the float so it shuts the fuel off sooner and it still runs extremely rich. When the tractor was barley running I took my LED Mag Light and was watching the pattern and where the needle valve comes up into the venturi I could see the spray from the high speed jet but there seems to be fuel leaking from around the bottom of the high speed jet and all the parts are accounted for from what I can see.

Here are some diagrams from the JD parts catalog.

Does it have a fixed main jet or adjustable? I'm reading it had 2 carb options, either kohler or walbro. Each has it's own settings for lean/rich mixtures, idle etc..

Not sure if this is the manual you have but it has some basic tuning information for your carb. Page 11-13

I'm wondering if you have the adjustable main jet, if it is not sitting all the way into where it goes or is not adjusted. I duno.

Links no worky.

That carbs so old, I'd have to see it apart. Or a diagram, -you probably did all that. Probably not a Walbro, I suspect a Kohler or Lauson Power Carb.

Mikuni, Keihin ? Who said that ? -It's not a dirt bike Toyz

Just get a new one Dave, -get a Holly double pumper

As old is that carb is Dave and looking at your pic, I'm pretty sure that's ban old Onan. They had that idle/fuel screw right on top like that. I had one on a backup generator for the Freight Liner.

It might not be, it's the only straight up and down set screw type that I've seen in the past.

Anyway, -were you able to find an EXACT kit for that particular model. That would be tough.

Which carb did you order ?

It's a Kohler, the high speed jet is on top and it's adjustable. I have the Deere service manual for the tractor and they have the adjustment for both carbs. I just need the damn thing to run and quit sucking money out of my savings account.
