I can see new car sales being way off, but I would think that service would still be good. Maybe you could run an add in craigslist or the local paper and work out of your garage.

well the problem with creating my own business out of my garage, is my house is not zoned for a business, so technically can't do that.

as for dealership service, there are a ton of independent shops in Austin that are soaking up alot of the work, and the middle class is being more frugal with their money, so they see it as cost effective to go to the independent shops.

Yeah, thought of both those things. And, I suppose you have checked around the independents to see if anyone is hiring. i saw a place here advertising for a diesel mech.
