Spy Shots: Camaro SS finally gets busy on the 'Ring
Nice car! I can't wait to see the shoot out issue between the Challenger, Mustang, and Camaro.
As for the Camaro going down the path of the GTO. I can't see it. The GTO bombed because it looked like a Cavalier/Grand Prix. The drivetrain was awesome.

You realize of course that the original Challenger stole directly from the 1969 Camaro. From the A pillar back, they are damned near the same car. There's going to be a resemblence.

Like it or not, at least the American auto makers are 'trying' to step up their game. They're in a deep hole and the more 'radical' designs seem to be big sellers... anything to work out of the hole.

I really like the looks of it but I agree it looks a little heavy and maybe needs to go on a diet. Kinda like the Charger and the GT500's seem to look heavy too. Maybe they are following the trends of American's and gaining weight. Also I hope those head lights are not what the production is going to be, they just don't seem to flow well with the car.
I cannot wait to see what LSX motor they are going to through in it for the first year run. I would think that it will have a min. of 350hp and max of 400hp. Then after a year or two its hard telling what power plant they'll put in it to up the ante some more. So the mustang GT's will still have some catching up to do as usual
I mean hell the LS1 from 1998-2002 that is in my car was only rated around 310 hp from GM but when the same crate motors were dyno'd they always range of 350hp +/- a few. I guess GM didn't want advertize the same HP for their flagship Vette as the pony cars.....I guess they were afraid to hurt Vette owners feelings
I figure I might have to pick one of these up a year or two after they hit the dealers. Got to give them a little time to work any bugs out and see if they offer a better engine option. Also the dealer will probably be marking them up beyond MSRP for awhile anyway. But I will have to test drive the first one I see.

The Mustang has a rabid following, as does the Camaro. But, the Mustang had a broader price range, and that was something GM did not compete with.
This was even more pronounced in the 90's, when Ford had the bargain basement 75 Hp 4 cylinder Mustang, the 225 HP LX 5.0 and the 225 HP GT 5.0. (Later rated at 215 HP).
Somehow, 302 vs 305, the Mustang always out ran the Camaro- until GM dropped the 5.7L LT1 V8 in the Camaro. Since that time, the Mustang has choked on Camaro dust (performance wise).
This choke point was more pronounced when Ford went to the 4.6L V8 (which contrary to popular belief, out performed the 5.0L), but still ate dust when Chevy stopped offering the 305, and went with either the V6 or the 5.7L V8. At 275 HP, the 1993 Camaro took no prisoners in Pony wars. Out-pacing the Mustang by more than a second in the 1/4 mile.
Be that as it was- the Mustang still sold more units than the Camaro and Firebird combined.

I honestly wonder where the mustangs would be IF Ford would've put R&D into the push rod motor instead of going modular. GM has proven it over and over again that the traditional push rod engine can be very efficient and still put out a ton of power. I also think that they should have the option of the 5.4L in the stang. But Ford seems to content to keep the affordable GT's under powered IMO. What do I know it seems to working for them as far as sales go.

I have no idea why Ford doesn't offer the 5.4 as an optional engine in the GT -- they could sell quite a few of them and earn an additional $2k on each Mustang sold with the upgrade. My God, they already have the engine, so additional costs would be minimal......

My '08 GT with the 4.6 in it is a blast to drive, but I can't imagine how awesome it would be to have the additional power of a 5.4 growling under the hood.......
