Or just a little premix is what I used to do when storing my 85

I like to soak it in oil to loosen the deposits of crap that have been there along time. They can break the compresion rings when you crank it up

CRF250rider1000: Thanks for the added info! If the basics don't get 'er cranked, its good to know where to go from there. Great looking truck, by the way - that grille looks awesome.

Tumba: That sounds like a good idea too. What type of oil would you recommend (I'm not familiar with the term "penetrating oil")? And how do I drain it back out of the sparkplug hole?

Is money an issue for you. If not, and if you dont get it started I would drop it off at the dealer and have it tuned up.

Just let the premix sit in there for a little while and soak around the piston. When you crank it over the premix will just burn off and that is it. leave the spark plug and crank it over 5 or 10 times after it soaks with oil. Then throw a new plug in there and crank it over

Also thanks! That grille has really impressed me I love it so far

Come on have faith in the man! I could rebuild the darn top end and carb by the time he spends 2 hours in labor at the dealer

Ok why did I just say that I work at a dealership
I do all of my work it is cheaper and teaches you about how everything works. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty. If you mess up, it can always be fixed. Just go slow and what I like to do is lay a towel down on the ground and lay every part out one at a time in a special order.

Just go slow and lay everything out and you will be fine I would invest in a good service manual if I were you. They have all the torque specs and tolerances that really help out when servicing the bike.

PS: Make sure you don't attempt to run the bike on that old gas because the premix and gas separates over time and can cause a lack of oil and seize the motor. I'm assuming your "gas" is more like gunk now after 10 years though

Oh yea one more tip: Don't run a 2 stroke out of gas it just isn't a good idea because unlike a 4 stroke, the 2 stroke gets it's lubrication from the premix in the fuel. Just a little tip. Wouldn't want anyone's motor to seize on them

www.dirtrider.net has a Great KDX forum.

I've had a couple KDX's and they're Great bikes. I wouldn't spend Too much money on it though as you can pick them up pretty cheap.

You're on the right track though. Clean and oil it up. Clean out the carb and it'll probably fire up. These things are Tough!
