How about a price range?
CRF, I've got a D40X. But considering it's got a price tag of nearly $1,000, it's out of a lot of peoples price range. If you want something on the "cheaper" side, just get a Sony PS camera.

I recently bumped up to a D40 myself (btw, the D40x is the 10mp version - the D40 is 6.1mp).
The new D40 replaced a Canon Powershot A95 5.0 MP camera which we liked a lot but decided to upgrade into a DSLR to capture the daughter as she grows.
The A95 features a 'flip out' screen that really was nice and simple to use. The picture quality is excellent and transferring the pics to a PC is a breeze. The zoom isn't too shabby but, if you're looking to really 'snag' something that is a decent distance away, this camera falls way short (as do nearly all point and shoot types).

that cannon looks like a nice camera but the one i have is a 3x optical zoom and 4megapixel so im looking to upgrade one if not both of those more. keep the suggestions coming guys. i aprreciate the info
I recently spent a lot of time researching cameras. I am looking for one with an intervalometer that can take a shot every ten seconds.
I saw a lot of cameras during my search. You really have to have a look to see if the one you're looking at has the features that you want.
In the price range you're looking in, I believe that there will be several offerings. I'm not sure which one will do what you want, but I'd guess that you'll have several to choose from.
I'm pretty sure that I'll be getting a Pentax. They are the only ones with an intervalometer that will take shots at intervals that will work for my application. They have two, the W30 and the K20D. I would like the K20D but I'm not in a position to spend fifteen hundred on a camera at the moment. The W30 is 7mp, X3 optical zoom and an intervalometer.
I guess my point is, there are a ton of cameras out there. There is a ton of information out there too. Check out Canon, Pentax, Olympus, Sony, Kodak, and the many, many others. There is one out there for you.

In that price range, look at the Canon A590 IS.

The camera GLC posted is a damn good camera for the money. I'm pretty partial to Sony for the P&S stuff but Cannon is a fine company as well. This one is $250 but it's a damn nice camera.

I'm partial to Canon because they have been in the forefront in cameras for over 30 years. I have an old A-1 film camera that I will *never* get rid of.
For digital, I have a cheap Kodak M753 that was a gift - I never would have bought it myself, but it *does* work. I'll use it till I feel like getting a Canon DSLR.

But it still kicks ***
