new camera suggestions
Some of the Kodak models are quite good for the money ($200+- range). Some other Kodak models exchange quite a bit of function for 'fashion' (pretty colors, small, etc...). They have alot of models, so choose carefully if you go with Kodak.
My wife and I each have a Kodak, and have been very pleased with the picture quality and ease of use. I think hers is the 885z, 8.1 megapixels, mine is older DX7630 (6.1 megapixels). Both have a nice size screen which is good if you like to pass the camera around at family events and show pictures. My only gripe is they don't seem to take good action photos at sporting events (too much trigger delay?). Her newer model is smaller and has a better optical zoom.

CANON CANON CANON. Take a look at the A850 or 750. Stay within that range and you will be more than satisfied. I have the older Kodak model that you are talking about. I work with computers so a lot of the guys around me are some what geeks (except me) and once I say the picture quality on the Canon I was amazed, now I want to get rid of my Kodak.

Some Canons to consider. I bought my Powershot G6 from them a few years ago and it's been flawless.
My wife has one of these Casios and it's a joy to use, even the video feature.

We picked up a Canon SD750 around Christmas for $250 at the time, I have seen them as low as $150 lately.

Nice big LCD screen for a point and shoot, plenty of automatic photo taking settings, decent video mode. Fits well in my front pants pocket. No viewfinder however, but who uses those on a digital anyway? (The Sd1000 is the same camera with the viewfinder if you really care.) Only complaint on the SD750 would be shutter lag.
Doing it again I'd spring for the SD850IS, same guts in a different housing but with image stabilization. Maybe $50-100 more over the 750.
